Make the Switch?

Hey all,

Im currently in college and have a Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook. After a little over two years of use, I have come to really dislike this laptop. The specs look something like this:

Windows XP Professional OS
17" Widescreen
1.0 GB RAM
100 GB Hard Drive
2.0GHz Pentium M Processor
Radeon X300 128mb Graphics Card
Anything I Left out let me know.

Alright so, I initially bought this computer because at the time I was an average gamer, had a ton of music and had some movies on the laptop. I thought I was going to want a large screen so I went with the 17" one and it worked well. Now that I have had this computer for about 2 years, I have grown to dislike it. Its very hard for me to bring this to class if I need to. Its very heavy and not that portable. Another thing is that it gets very VERY hot, almost to the point where it burns.
So here is my issue...my father recently came to me to see what kind of notebook he should get from his office since he is in need of one. I told him that I would gladly give him my computer in return for a different one. I am aware that Windows Vista has just hit the market and right now my computer qualifies for an upgrade. And, since I've been in college I've been around many Mac users and enjoy the type of computer they are. I need to make the choice of either purchasing a new notebook with Windows Vista, keep my current computer and upgrade it or purchase a Mac (preferably a powerbook).
I basically need some input on which path to take. I've been a PC user for most of my life but am willing to make the switch since I'm getting sort of sick of the problems I have been having with PC's. I'm looking for a computer that will be used mainly for taking some notes, using office, holding my music library which is still growing towards 4500 songs and to keep some of my movies and all of my pictures.
Phew, I know that was a lot but if you could, please let me know what I should do. I'm leaning towards a Mac right now but am open to other suggestions. Thanks a lot guys

Well, a Mac will work splendidly for everything you want. In your case there's really no reason not to buy a Mac unless price is a consideration.

And as the new Macs run on Intel processors there's no need to completely give up Windows. You can either Dual Boot Windows and OS X or you can run Windows inside a virtual machine like Parallels or VMWare.

Kakaze is right. In your current situation I would definitely suggest getting a mac. But, since you regret the 17" I would go with the 15". But, currently you can have both Windows XP and OS X. Soon, I'm hoping, that we will be able to run both operating systems at the same time with gaming. In your current situation, I would suggest getting a mac. Windows Vista was just released, and because of that, I wouldn't get it yet. There are a lot of bugs and whatnot that have to be fixed so Vista is really buggy right now. It costs a lot and many computers have a hard time running it smoothly.

I just made the switch two weeks ago to a MBP 15". Absolutely no regrets. I installed bootcamp with XP the other night, and quite frankly I only have it there in case I need to install some engineering software. Until then, it won't get used.
