bought a macbook-2 simple questions about sleep and keeping it awake with shut lid

So far i like it. I just feel a bit lost. Is there a help database like with windows? As for my 2 questions:

1) How do i keep my macbook from going to sleep when i shut the lid? i like it to stay awake if i'm just moving from one room to the other, and its akward and more likely to be dropped if i have to keep it open.

2) What is sleep exactly? i heard it was like hibernation on a pc. If that is true then it shouldnt be using any power whatsoever when in sleep mode. Why does the light still keep blinking? Is it in fact using power? and if it is, is there anything equivelent to hybernate that does not use a bit of power?

Thanks for any help that you can give me
Dan

ps. Are there any more active forums geared towards people migrating from pc to mac?

I think i can kill 2 birds with 1 stone here sleep is similar to hibernation in what it does. but sleep has several advantages, its faster to come in and out of sleep, and when you come out of sleep most all applications resume what they were doing. Yes it does battery power but very little at that, I let my macbook pro sleep for a week and only lost half my battery.

I would assume that there is a setting to shut off sleep (should be in system pref's in energy saver) although I've never needed to disable it.

Macforums and macnn might help with your questions this place has a few switchers but those places are crawling with mac gurus

i'm not sure exactly how sleep works, but the function might be like "suspend to RAM" functions on some windows desktop setups (was/is a function supported by various chipsets). basically everything is powered down except for the RAM to maintain the state the OS is in. then when you come out of sleep it's just a matter of powering up the peripherals so u can pick up where you left off. not sure what kind of response you are getting from the sleep mode, but if u have suitable RAM coming out of sleep should only take a few seconds at most, for me it's maybe 2 seconds. the notion of closing it and opening it from room to room should be a non-issue and most apps i've used whether it's video encoding or a file download, just picks up where it left off.

The issue isn't the speed. It is very fast. I just like to close my notebook at times with out deactivating programs like ichat, and i want to keep downloads downloading even if the macbook is shut.

those functions by default are reserved for when you "desktop" your system. essentially, the logic is that the only time you would need your system to be functional with the lid closed is when you are actually actively using it. e.g.-external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

try the following at your discretion.

sleepless would have been perfect but its buggy and the monitor wont turn back on after shutting the lid without putting it into sleep mode first which defeats the purpose. if he can fix it however then it will be perfect

the only time these laptops truly HIBERNATE is when the battery dies. itll save everything to the HD, like a pc, and shut down.

other than that, the ram is just powered up, with everything stored in that. using the sleep, uses about .75% of battery / hr. maybe less

most laptops dissipate heat through the keyboard, thus it wouldn't be a good idea to let your notebook sit with the lid closed when its not sleeping. A few days ago i closed the lid of my xps gen 2 , thinking it went to standby, well it didn't, when i got back to my room after maybe 3 hrs the comp was very warm, as in 75 C (it idles at 40).

true, but it think it would be fine. The only programs that would be running would be a download and ichat anyway.

If you find a good solution, let me know. I'm constantly getting frustrated changing rooms in my house and losing a download (no, not all downloads are resumeable), or signing on and off line everytime I shut my lid. I like being able to leave my laptop on at night to receive messages and seeing what I missed the next day. My old windows laptop was capable of leaving the computer running with the lid closed, and I miss it.

Out of the box, you can't. There are programs that let you do this very thing, the only issue is I haven't found one that works well with an Intel MBP, and I don't think anyone else has either.

You might want to try asking over at http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/ about this. When I had my MACs they where very helpfull.

I, too, am interested in such forum(s).

there is only one way i have figured out to do this. when it's asleep, put in/take out a usb device. however, i guess this doesn't help you.

anyhow, what i usually do is fold the lid down partway and move the computer carefully :P Grip it with both hands, one below sorta cradling it and one holding the corner, and you got yourself covered!

Sorry, seems to be the best solution for ya :\

As I have posted on these forums a fair amount every time this comes up, clamshell mode IS supported by Apple, and you can find instructions on it in the knowledgebase.

In as far as what will activate it, pretty much any input can activate it, be it by (un)plugging a USB device, bluetooth, IR remote, whatever. My wife does this all the time actually with her MacBook.

In as far as preventing the sleep state, I would say it likely is possible, and likely will involve editing a .conf file by hand to be honest, and finding it to start with. Unfortunatly I don't know BSD as well as I should, and Mac tries to hide its BSD underlayings anyways, so I can't give you to much help there.

I understand your predicament(OP) but honestly it gets easy to get around, a lot of times the reconnect from moving is quick enough it isn't noticed from your perspective even if your friends on iChat or whatever do see you go away for a minute or two. If you are doing something (Encoding or whatever) that can't be interrupted, just hold the lid open a little as you move as was suggested, generally even for me this isn't a huge deal.
