False Advertising?

I just purchased a '9000' series HP laptop (64-bit dual core with 2 GB ram).

If this is a true 64-bit laptop why did it come with the 32-bit version of Vista?

Anybody know a good lawyer?

Pretty much ALL laptops being sold come with 32bit
However, if you have a 64bit processor, which you do, all it takes a call to HP customer service and asking them for the 64-bit vista disk.
They will probably ask you to mail old one in...not sure how it works with old one, but they will give you 64-bit.

Do you happen to have a link or e-mail address for HP??

It wasnt false advertising by the way, they sold you exactly what they said, the hardware specs of a system are totally independent of the software specs, so indeed you did get a truly 64 bit laptop hardware wise. It remains a 64 bit laptop regardless of what version OS is installed.

Too bad ur gonna have to pay again for the 64bit vista edition, it's not like it's a free upgrade from the one you have already.

And like arch said, it's not at all false advertising. If in the specs it said "64bit vista" and you got the 32bit version, then yes that is false advertising.

Did it say 64 bit when you bought it? If not, don't expect HP to give u a more expensive version of Vista just cuz ur a nice person.

When I purchase a 'top of the line' laptop I expect it to have software to take advantage of the hardware. If I wanted 32 Bit Vista I would have bought a cheaper laptop!

Actually the 32 and 64 bit Vista versions cost the same amount of money!!

In fact a retail key for vista will work for either version. And both versions of the retail disk can be downloaded quite readily, furthermore there are some aftermarket discs that contain both retail versions.

That said, its not HP's fault you cant read jim!
Also HP does not make "Top of the Line" laptops, thats not to say they arent good laptops, but far from top of the line.
Lastly its fine to expect the software to take advantage of the hardware, but it is in no way HP's fault you didnt read the system specs before you purchased it. Next time read first, purchase second.... not the other way around.

My 9225 came with the 64 bit OS. It's easily verified by clicking on Start, Computer, System Properties & make sure under System Type it reads what OS it has.

Here is my biggest beef if I do indeed have 32-bit Vista on this new 64-bit machine.

Isn't it true that you can't run 64-bit software under a 32-bit OS? If so then if HP is selling these machines with the 32-bit OS it is like building a 400 HP Nascar engine and putting it in a car with a single-speed transmission!

It is true. You can't run 64-bit software on 32-bit OS. I am curious though, why do you even need 64-bit OS? Do you know that drivers for it are much rarer than 32-bit (which btw is still hard to find because many manufacturers still dont have Vista drivers) Do you have like a specific need to run 64-bit Vista?

Actually, 64bit vista is like taking a beautiful Ferrari Enzo and putting in a 3 cylinder 90hp engine. 64bit is all just show, it has no benefits over 32bit and in fact, due to the lack of drivers and software, it is actually worse than 32bit. So unless you need more than 3gb of ram, or have specific software that is made for 64bit, you're better off in 32bit Vista.

A much better analogy......

Not so much, given the right hardware/software combinations, even 32bit apps can really have significant performance improvements when running in a 64bit OS. even without 3+gbs of ram!!!
