I just dont know... U1 vs. W7

Thread Starter
Im an ultraportable kind of guy, i absolutely love my S5n but it seems slow at times and the intel 2200B/G card seems to have more and more problems as time goes on.

Anyways i have been looking for a new laptop for a little while because my girlfriend just got a new Dell D420, and while im not really a Dell guy the D420 is an awesome laptop, Core2Duo baby!

But to the point now, when she gets something new i have to, and when i get something new she has to. So im in the market for a new laptop. When i saw the announcement that Asus would be releasing the U1 i got super excited! But come to find out that no one knows when it will be released in the US... which really really sucks (but then again i am going to Europe this summer...mmmm this might be a good thing!).

So i am down to two or three options. I want to still be small and portable, and MUST be widescreen. I have lived without a graphics card in my laptop since i gave up my Alienware so its not THAT important, though it would be nice since my girlfriend seems to be taking over my gaming rig more and more playing the damn Sims2.

So pros and cos on the U1 vs. W7...

U1 Pros:
super slick design
super small, and light
11.1 widescreen
Core2Duo (at least from some of the reviews)
finger print reader
sweet LED screen

U1 Cons:
slow ass processor (though faster than anything i have right now)
small HDD, and small HDD form factor (making replacing expensive and hard)
integrated graphics
unknown battery life.....

W7 Pros:
13.3 Widescreen
fast Core2Duo
Visa (though i dual boot ubuntu)
integrated optical (though i have lived without it on my S5n and dont miss it)
dedicated Nvidia Go 7400 (major plus.... )
a lot cheaper than U1!

W7 Cons:
Heavy! (comaritively speaking at 4.3lbs)
larger than what i have now....
battery life compaired to my S5n (i get 10 hours on my S5n with 9 cell)

So what do you guys think? They say that if i can get a U1 it will be around $2,200 or so... and the W7 i can get for under $1,300. Im really not sure what to do, i wont be getting one until late summer, fallish. Im going to be needing an ultraportable because i am graduating from college this fall (may) and will be entering graduate school or law school after that.... so ill be doing the same thing i am now, and need a light notebook for taking notes in class.

So help me.... because i am torn between the two, the U1 is so sweet looking, but the W7 had a dedicated graphics card, all i play really are Steam games, i mean they run in software mode on my S5n.... but then again that is what i have a desktop for! lol.

Thanks guys in advance!

well, there's nothing out now that will get anywhere near the battery life of your S5n, and I don't think there will be until new battery technology is developed. However, the W7J has a 9 cell battery option, which should easily give it more battery life than the U1. As I see it, the W7 beats the U1 in performance, has better battery life and is a whole lot cheaper, but the U1 is a bit smaller, half the weight and looks better. If the size, weight, and looks are worth the spec and price differences, get the U1. But otherwise, go for the W7.
