Best HDMI DVD Player?

Ok, need a DVD player to go with my 42" Plasma 1080p TV.

Want:

- HDMI
- Upscaling to 1080p
- Digital sound out

Don't need DivX or anything like that, since the Xbox360 does that for me. Don't need DVR, or anything else, just best quality for, let's say, under $200US?

Whatcha got?

Check out Oppo Digital. The Oppo 981 upconverts to 1080p and has HDMI. I have one ... quite happy with it. It comes highly recommended on AVSforums.

Oops ... didn't see your price limit. This one is slightly over $200.

The helios neodigits player is sweet. I have one in my theater and it looks great. It also plays any region dvds which is a plus if you are a fan of international films like me. Only thing I don't like is that it has an annoying menu that pops up and take five seconds to go away when you hit seek or change the subtitle options. There may be a way to get it to not pop up. I haven't looked into it yet.

A upconverting DVD player was a good idea at the time when most HDTV have very basic upscaling equipments built-in and the best scaling chip is the Faroudja used in the Oppo units. That said, a lot of the new HDTV actually have a decent scaler so the difference between using a upconverting DVD to up conver the signal before it reaches the TV and just inputing 480p and letting the HDTV's internal scaler do the job is becoming less noticable overtime. Case in point. I have tried a couple upconverting DVD players, a Samsung and Sony. The both offer noticable improvment back when I was using the Sceptre 42" 1080p set since the built-in scaler is pretty bad. but after I got the Sharp Aquos 46", the difference is much less noticable. So depending on the internal scaler on the TV you are hooking up to. the result can range from fairly noticable to not really noticable at all. Much as I like the the Oppo units with the Faroudja chip, I really would not spend $200+ on a DVD player when I can get a Blu-ray player for around $450.
