Is anyone else....bored....by laptop technology now?

I remember the last few years, with the speeding up of processors and graphics cards, and then the switch to dual core, it was pretty exciting stuff.

Now it's like...

I miss the days of and and . Bring them back!

It kind of reminds me of what happened with PDAs. Nothing has happened in years with PDA tech.

I miss the wanting to upgrade my laptop every 4-6 months!

I want to feel like a again.

So you're saying that the last big thing to happen was dual-core and then 64-bit.

Well, duh, it's been what? 6 months since Core2Duo... I fully expect at least another two years of boring improvements (Santa Rosa is nice, but not that WOW, DX10 is nice, but the first generation will not be too impressive).

well, Santa Rosa is coming out in May. Then the 45mu chips are coming 1H next year.

Hmm, actually, how bout Dell coming out with a new look. We've had the same silver laptops with white or black trims for... a few generations now!

Oh.. and please add a second hard drive slot/raid, webcam too.

SLI isn't exciting for ya?

We talked a bit about this with Alienware last week... Piece will be up on Monday morning!

And not just any banana, but a dancing one at that.

I think Santa Rosa itself will be exciting enough if it comes with everything they are saying it will come with. Nearly instant boot up times sounds exciting to me.

Well, I just upgraded from a Dell 9300 to the current machine in my sig. It rather feels like upgrading from a model T to a Lotus Elise. I can only take so much change at once, so forgive me if I'm a bit reticent to upgrade to a...millenium falcon quite yet.

C2Duo, 10000+ 3dmark05 points, blinking lights and blu-ray is plenty foreplay excitement for me with current gen tech. What else does my laptop need? A removeable one slice toaster with laser monogram etching?

Santa Rosa and DX10 should make for some nice new toys though.

Honestly, that's some nice gear, but nothing that makes me go wow. I had an Inspiron 8600 with a 1.7Ghz Pentium-M, 2GB DDR, and a Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo, and a 1920x1200 15.4" display, and a 60GB 7200rpm hard drive. It was a great machine. And how many years ago was that? I feel like, BESIDES the graphics card upgrades, nothing has really changed. Even dual core doesn't do much for me. Just personal feelings. And yes, I want to feel like a

I also had an Alienware m9700 SLI rig for about a month before selling it on ebay and buying this machine. I really hated SLI. I hope Nvidia gets on the ball with improving SLI support and stability.

Just wondering where you read about instant boot up times from?
Me thiinks it's a problem of overload to the user rather than technology advancement. Laptops have recently been keeping pace with desktops. That alone is a big advancement. Keep in mind the lower voltages in newer CPU's lately, dual core, DDR2, higher capacity hard drives, SLI, 19" and 20" displays, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. The advances are there, it just appears you may have become numb my friend.

I agree with the original poster, I mean I still want to upgrade but I don't feel as enthusiastic as I did last year. Honestly the whole dual core thing was a bit of a bust in my opinion because I just can't feel that speed boost I would've hoped it was offering. Also, as you've said...everything I was looking forward to came out and now it's just like "bleh" it just feels like the major innovations came out and now it's a boring market to me. Obviously I don't have the best right now, but I'm high up in my system specs and I feel like I've been here for a while with no worries. Anyway, off to relax....had an optical migraine and probably shouldn't be on the computer

Only thing that ever really excited me was when they started putting gaming class graphics in laptops. Though even that and everything since has just been predictable and anounced far too long before it has been available to get me excited when it is finally released. Only thing that would excite me now would be a massive sudden jump in 2.5" storage capacity or battery technology...

It all depends on how easily excited you are really.

Well I'm bored too you're not alone. I bought an XPS M170 over a year ago and thought wow! what a laptop but then just realized that I would get a kick ass desktop rig instead using that money. However now I own both the XPS M170 and a new kickass desktop gaming rig with an E6600 and an 8800GTX Don't think it'll be anymore laptops for me own the m170 and the Amilo Si1520 that's enough.

Nothing can defend the price a laptop costs compared to what you get in desktop performance and performance is essential to me since I play games.
I agree petterson, if only I could pull the trigger on a system....
Well there is always something comming down the pipes to look forward to.

Dx10 for lappies will probably mean selling my M1710 and buying a new Dell

That's always fun...seems I need to buy a new laptop every year to satisfy my Itch lol
post #20 of 71
Yup, nothing much exciting right now, but as always there is stuff in the works. I have zero motivation to upgrade until Santa Rosa & DX10 is out and mature.

My next purchase will be a desktop.
