Will this work in an XPS Gen2? With the existing hard drive cradle?

Thanks!

Yes.

The XPS Gen 2 is ATA/100. We're screwed out of a 160GB 7200 if Hitachi doesn't make one since the 7200.2s are SATA-only. Only the 9300S had SATA and were a *very* limited run.

Last I recall Dell does not use Seagate for there notebook drives but im sure that could change being that this will be a wanted item for there Alienware and XPS notebooks.

They use Hitachi almost exclusively except when it comes to customers wanting 750GB drives or Raptors - at least for now.

I read all the replies and I'm still unclear...does this mean a hitachi is the only brand that will work w/ an XPS Gen2?

Nice find! I remember how much I wanted the 100GB 7200RPM drive when it came out. I never bought one. I currently have two drives for my M1710, an 80GB 7200RPM and a 160GB 5400RPM. I almost always have the 80GB drive installed, but I would really like to double my storage with that drive. I think I will wait until it drops to $200 though.

I thought that ALL XPS's were SATA already. I know the late 9300s (like mine) were SATA, but I though all XPSs were. Sorry.

Great find!

nice, but gonna wait a tad til the price drops too around 200

I wish they would make a hybrid 7200, 160gb drive with flash memory too, that thing would fly.

this is great for now though .. woohoo.

No.

Any ATA/100 laptop drive will work in the XPS Gen 2. I'm not certain if the M170s were all ATA/100 but remember hearing they were. Only the 9300S had SATA in the non-S 9300/XPS2/M170 line.

Your confusion is coming from the fact that these drives (the Seagate 7200.2s) are only available in SATA. Thus, they don't work on the non-S 9300s/XPS2s/or M170s.

My comment was a hope that Hitachi, realizing there's a market for a 160GB 7200rpm notebook hard drive, puts out their model in both interfaces.

Hmm, I don't remember when I ordered....

Do you know how I can check mine? It's a 80GB drive.

Just pop the hard drive out. Only gotta remove two screws on the bottom.
