2 of my 3 laptops from dell came with seagate drives.

Dell certainly use Seagates in their laptops. Heck, I got a 100GB Seagate in my M1710.

Then they must just use whatever's cheapest that month.

It's a year old but here's an interesting comparison between 2.5" ata drives.

Dell's just-in-time business model basically means they just use whatever they can get their hands on really and the brand of certain components can change day to day depending on availability. A very brief overview but it's worth a further read on how they operate...

Well I just found a store that shows this drive shipping in 4 days! But, its $239.99.

Will this fit in my xps m1710?

My 100gb is already full

EDITED:

Is this the same thing?

funny that it doesn't have perpendicular magnetic recording, which makes hitachi's 5400 rpm disk almost as fast as 7200 drives. I have one and it works sweet. 160 GB U$ 130
post #29 of 108
sweet i was thinking about a new one from the 80 gig 5400rpm that i have, im sure prices will drop right when i fill my drive up..e1705 are in the clear right?

actually it does use perpendicular recording . .

so Perpendicular recording + higher density/capactity platters + 7200rpm = fastest laptop drive available by a good margin.

I'm fairly certain all new seagate drives use the new recording technology.

I will be getting one as soon as they are available on a site that ships to canada

ST9160823AS. This is the drive that came with my 1710 (160GB) It's a Seagate as you can see. all of my 100's were Hitachi though.

I'd be happy to get one from a site that has them in stock period.

Yea I'm hoping Frontier PC will have it soon for us Cad residents, though it'll prob cost a small fortune like when I picked up the 7200.1 as soon as it was available this side of the price inflation border. Course I need to factor in a SATA to USB\1394 2.5" enclosure for my old drive as well, which will make it the 7th external drive I have lol.

NCIX has it listed with a 1-2 week waiting period. Not a bad CAD price though, $214 for the standard model, $221 for the G. Gonna order it and hope it doesn't take too long.

do you think the g-protection is worth the few extra bucks . . not sure if i even want that, what if it decides to park the head every time i move it slightly or pick the notebook up. but then again, im sure they wouldn't sell it if it didn't work as its supposed to.

are there any good reviews for this drive yet, comparing it to other 7200rpm drives both notebook and desktop, i wonder how it compares to the 7200.10 seagate desktop drives with 16mb cache?
I would think there's the chance the G capability will actually slow the drive down (though I'm sure it can be turned off), but since I'm getting it for my M1210 and I will be banging it around at work I'm gonna go for it. A quick Goggle search will grab you one review for the drive, (sorry forgot the site lol). They state impressive results, though I have feeling that when Hitachi releases their model it will be faster for laptop use. However since I'm only in Canada for 5 more weeks I'm going for this guy.

I have knocked around my 1405 more times than I can count. It's fallen off a desk onto a concrete floor & still have not had any HDD issues...heck it even got up close & personal with a torch on a jobsite. Never had an issue with the HDD. I think the "G" is for people in very rough enviroments where there are a lot of shocks.

for the extra few $$ I would get it though.
