Int. 8790 TV Tuner vs. AVerMedia UltraTV USB 300 vs. Hauppauge WinTV PVR2

I am planning on using the 8790 to transfer old VHS/camcorder videos to HDD possibly for some video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro) and eventually for storage to CDs or DVDs. In addition, I'd also like to be able to schedule recording TV programs for storage later on to CD or DVD.

I am thinking of dropping the TV Tuner option in my 8790 order and replacing it with the purchase of either an ext. Hauppauge WinTV PVR2 (http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvp..._datasheet.htm) or an AVerMedia UltraTV USB 300 (http://www.aver.com/products/tvtuner..._USB_300.shtml). I don't have enough facts about the internal TV Tuner that comes with the 8790 but after reading numerous reviews, I am under the impression that the Hauppauge PVR2 produces better picture quality (less pixelation, no audio lags especially on VCR/camcorder->HDD video transfers). In addition, Hauppauge has a TV scheduler as well as program guide included. The UltraTV USB 300 has comparable specs to the WinTV PVR2 except that I don't think it has a program guide and its requirements specify that it requires a PCI VGA card (which the 8790 doesn't have? So this won't work anyway with the 8790? I'm not familiar with this, can someone please explain?) The UltraTV USB 300 (found a site that sells this for $106) is almost half the price of the Hauppauge ($199 retail) but I've seen too much bad feedback about AVerMedia producing crappy products so I'm scared to pull the trigger.

Advice/recommendations/additional info. are highly appreciated.

Does you VCR has S-Video out?

My camcorder has S-Video out. But my VCR does not. I was planning to use either a composite RCA connection to the TV tuner or an RCA to S-Video converter. (I ordered this: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10352402&loc). I've never used a TV tuner before but I suspect that it's also possible to use a regular coaxial cable connection (by selecting channel 3 on the tv tuner perhaps like one would in a regular tv?)

In addition, I'm not familiar with what causes audio lags/pixelation in the first place and wonder which TV tuner option would allow me to avoid this problem?

The PVR software included with the Hauppauge products is not very good. Snapstream or Sage would be a better choice. I would also recommend using a desktop for a pvr. I have a usb pvr for my laptop but dont like leaving it on 24/7 for recordings

Thanks analogking! Both SnapStream and Sage look great! And they support Hauppauge WinTV PVR2. I'm leaning towards getting Hauppauge now because it has H/W encoding (which I think the internal TV Tuner and AVerMedia UltraTV do not)

I ordered my 8790 without the TV Tuner and also bought the Hauppauge WinTV PVR2.
I did it because I need a PAL-M compatible tuner. When I was researching for the best external Tuner, I found this article that may help you.

For what I know this external tuner has a better image quality than the Internal tuner, and also has a hardware encoder.

I'm still evaluating the tuner. I will try dubing a VCR and writing it to VCD, SVCD, and DVD. This will take a while and I will post the results in my evaluation thread.

Thanks luabad. Let us know how it works out. I'm probably getting Hauppauge myself.
