There will never be an update where the fan turns off, it will simply get too hot by doing that.
Why not? Ok when you play games the Fan can turn on, but if I work with word the temp of the CPU ist 36-39°C , why did you need the fan at this temp?

Tomorrow, a carrier comes to take the computer.
I have the guarantee Acer Advantage thus they have 5 days to repair the computer after reception...
We shall see

I don't know if the overheat protection (the reboot feature) was there in previous firmwares or if it's new in this one, but if it was there before they obviously changed the trigger value.
If you work with Word the CPU clock automatic down to 800MHz! So you don´t need the CPU und the ATI-Card! But when I sit in front of it and everything is quit in the room, the fan-Noice sucs! My Brother has an Asus NB the fan turn sometimes on and when there is no need it turn off! And the Temp auf the CPU is 45°C when you write an Text! So it is possible, in other Acer too, but you can´t control the fan by ACPI, bescause the fan in the Ferrari is controlled by embedded controller! That sucs!

For those of you who have found that it's impossible to update BIOS after you install Vista THERE IS A SOLUTION!!! I have an Acer Ferrari 4000 and I also have been unable to update the flash post Vista upgrade .. however I found the solution. I followed the instructions on the page in this link, and armed with the new BIOS file from Acer I succesfuly updated my laptop .. NO ISSUES! It is now noticeably faster and smoother running Vista .. well worth it. Remember to backup your important data and existing BIOS (you could create a boot disc later with the BIOS if the worst happened). This is the link you have all been waiting for: http://global.shuttle.com/event/vista/page04.html

Also, I've noticed that with 3A27 the volume on the laptop is much higher now from both the speakers and the headphones plug... anyone else notice this? I also really want to upgrade the proc to an ML44, but don't know if the BIOS will take it. I know it'll work with an ML42 because the 4006 has that, but I just don't think that small of a bump in speed will do much. I'd rather go all out and do the ML44.
Hi, Just installed a Turion ML-44 (Evesham £100 via Ebay) this evening on my 4005wlmi running Win XP Pro x64. Am using 3A27 - I think the volume is louder. Got 2Gb of PC3200 (A64 tweaker says its running at proper 3200 speeds - don't know brand - advertised as 2Gb mem for ferrari 4005 on ebay) and used Acronis true image to change the HDD to a seagate momentus 7200.1. The thing runs beautifully. Got the 4005 service manual - but the heatsink is different to the one in the pictures - had to take out the fan because the heatsink is recessed underneath it. Beware that the CPU is the most difficult component to get to. Also, be super careful with main power cable to motherboard - needs to be teased out from both sides. There are some tiny ribbon cables that are very tricky to take out and put in.

That's awesome. You got the 2.4 to work. I was wondering if it was going to run properly or not. Can you run some benchmarks on it and tell us what you get?

I'm interested in more info about this. Post a screenshot of the system about screen and also do some performance tests. I want to know if the system detects it as the appropriate ML-44 CPU or something else and if the full 2.4GHz get's detected. I also want to know if the cpu speed steps down appropriately from 2.4 to 1.6 and 800MHz respectfully when not used.

If all goes well, I think I might take the plunge and upgrade mine to ML-44.
Can't seem to post attachment....
- Speed reported as 2.39 Ghz and CPU as ML-44 in My computer / CPU-Z / Sandra
- Dhrystone ALU 8778 MIPS / Whetstone iSSE3 6595 MFLOPS (Athlon FX-53 is 8826 & 6509 respectively)
- Mem - may have jumped gun - 200Mhz MEMCLK in A64 Tweaker, but Freq=159.2 Mhz in CPU-Z
- Fan seems to run at highest speed pretty much all of time, but exhaust is generally cooler.
- For what its worth, someone else on the forum ran 3Dmark03 and got 6034, its 6172 now.
- Would run even better with the later Seagate momentus 7200.2 160Gb or Hitachi Travelstars
chrs,
Mark.

So, are you saying that the upgrade was worth it or not? It doesn't sound like it was. Also, run PI on it and see how much faster it is. The 2GHz CPU blows at that test when compared to Intel Dual Cores. I guess when I said I'd like to see comparisons I meant that it would be nice to see them side by side. I guess 400MHz just doesn't make that mush of a difference. I don't know if I could deal with the fan on BLAST all the time. Why is it doing that? Does the speed not step down to 800MHz when idle? It sounds like that is what's going on. Can you reverify? I ask this because I'm in the process of putting one of these CPUs on order, but if it's not worth it I won't.
I reckon it was well worth it. FX-53 performance in a laptop of this age / price is none too shabby.
Wack in a 7200.2 or the latest travelstar and I don't think you will be disappointed - for general home computing the responsiveness is instant - but its not going to make much of a difference for 3d gaming.

Ideally I would have run some benchmarks before upgrading - something to remember for next time.
SuperPI is now 42 secs for 1M.

Actually, after using the thing a for a week and thrashing it / running benchmarks, the fan seems to have settled down - it does seem to change between 3 settings.

Hope this is of some help.

Does anyone with A27 experience problems with the network (ethernet) device? My own stops working after a while under windows and linux.

Any help would be appreciated...
