Acer 5611 Notebook - Slow Boot

Hi. I think this problem has been present since I recieved this notebook.

The problem is it takes a long time to start up. Eg. It stays on that blue screen that says welcome for a long time, and one the desktop appears, there is still more loading to be done.

Once the starup has been done, everything runs really fast though. (It has Intel Core Duo T2050 1.6GHz and 1Gb of RAM).

Are there any ideas for making it boot faster?

I was thinking of maybe uninstalling the acer empowering software and the launch manager for the keyboard shorcut keys. And also replace Norton with AVG in the next month.

That right there tells the whole story The problem is most likely a slow hard drive combined with a lot of things on startup. I can tell you right now that Norton is a hog, especially on startup. You should disable all but the few things taht you need at startup, such as anti-virus and any anti-spyware you have. I personally have 2 things that run at startup, AV and RMClock, and even with a slowish hdd I still have relatively fast boot times.

Yer I thought it may be a problem with excessive startup items. I dont believe that any are spyware, but some may be un-needed. Ill look into what i should disable....(there are around 60-odd processes running by the time its fully started up...but a lot of them seem to be acer/norton/graphics/sound related ect.)

That is wayyy to many. You should be able to get into the low 30's range. Like I said before, besides an antivirus or antispyware or a needed system utility, u dont need anything else on startup for ur system to work (liek sound, graphics, acer crap etc.)

I have a bit of a play around last night and managed to reduce the boot time to a 'preety good' level. A lot better than it was. I stopped quite a lot of startup items, however i still have all of norton and acer stuff running. I also did a defrag, used bootvis and registry clean.

I havent really changed any of the system services. Is that worth looking into?

I think I still have mid-40's of processes of running after startup.

I suggest reading this article on speeding up boot times. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1785996,00.asp. It gives some info on which items you can disable and which you should keep, as well as some other good ideas.
