I'm on the phone as we speak and all she will tell me is that the replacement will be "a direct (meaning a second Gen II) replacement", or an equivalent unit. Any guesses on what they will be sending me?

EDIT: Current Specs:

2.0 Dothan
6800 Ultra
1 Gig of ram (I upgraded it on the side to 2 Gigs, they only know about 1 Gig)
80 Gig harddrive

It'll be a M1710 most likely, 7900GS 2ghz Core 2 Duo, 1/2gb ram something like that

in the words of Borat: "It'sa nice!"

I have a Case #, Disp #, and Exchange #.... can I use any of these to check my replacement's status online?

go to your account online, then on the right hand side of the website, go down look for a link to "service call status". Click, then enter your current service tag and search it, hopefully it will show up.

While it's sweet I'm getting a replacement, I just want a laptop that works. I paid like 3,500 dollars for this thing the day it was available for purchase and I want my money's worth... This current lappy has gone through:

2 Cpu's
1 set of ram
1 hd
2 LCD's
1 keyboard
1 touchpad
2 graphics cards

And they were giving me a hard time on the phone about a replacement... They wanted my laptop shipped to them first so they could go "over it with a fine tooth comb" to fix the problem so they didnt have to replace it, but i told them I require 24/7 access to my laptop as I am a college student with a heavy homework load.

Yeah, they pull that on a lot of people the whole "can you send it back to the depot for a full investigation?" and generally they'll push for a while but eventually give on a system replacement. Should be a great upgrade for you

How long does it usually take to show up online? And is it worth it to upgrade to the GSX? I hope mine just can oc to it normally.... what bout the newer 8800's...wonder if theres a chance of that?

Also, will Gen II batteries work in the 1710? I bought an extra one and would like to know if it hasn't become a paper weight yet...

Yep, they work perfect.

Mine took 1 full day tops, also when doing the search make sure you don't select any options to not view open calls. Also, I haven't gone GSX, but just overclocked under GS bios, and it does offer a performance increase but personally I'll just stick with default settings now (despite my sig) because I can play any game i'd like without a problem, so why overclock.

8800's I'd put my money on would NOT be able to fit into the current chassis just because of so many issues involved in the matter such as heat, size, and there is also just too much time to know from now, till they're released.

yeah well... watch them send me a refurb gen II or m170 with a scratched cover... I pray that doesn't happen though because I don't want to sit on the phone again with dell for two hours trying to send the refurb back

Don't worry about it. I highly doubt you'll get a M170 or Gen2. Keep your hope up

Just for the record, I got my Gen 2 replacement about 2 and a half weeks ago ( a M1710 with a 7400, 1 gig ram, 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive and a 7900gs) You will be getting a Rev 1 7900GS card so will NOT be able to do the GSX flash. You will have to do Juan's bios flash with the 791UNV.ROM to overclock.

How do you know what I will get? How does Rev 1 differ from what others have gotten? Is it older or newer? I would assume since its a 1710 its brand new... Either way, as long as I can hit gtx speeds it's all good
post #18 of 49
theres no guarantee which card you get imo, youll just have to find out when you get it (although I'd think it was likely to be rev1)...The thing is you wont be able to hit gtx speeds without the gtx bios so if youre rev1 (bios lacks 1.5 kb of values and other changes) youre screwed...that is until I can get my hands on a 7900gs and test some stuff out
