So I finally got the guts to break down my macbook pro lastnight. I had heard rumors that some of the earlier batches of these (like mine) had gotten bad thermal compound jobs. Well after about an hour of breaking it down and 4-5 near heart attacks (Nothing broken) I turn it over and to my surprise the thermal compound is all over the place. Over a millimeter thick of cured compound on each one so bad it had gotten off the core of the chip. This was a HORRIBLE job done I had bought an oversized tube of Arctic Silver 5 for this purpose on my last desktop build.
I'd advise anyone with a good amount of computer hardware knowledge with an early make Macbook Pro to do the same.
After another hour of putting it back together, I noticed the temps dropped from a rather high idle 48C to a amazingly low 37-39C Idle Of course since I run my macbook pro overnight that temp has risen a bit but still much lower than it used to be.
