New mac user, two quick and dirty questions

Thread Starter
I just got a macbook pro c2d this week. A fabulous machine, I love using it. I find OS X to be different. Not better, not worse, just different. My opinion may change over the weeks and years.

Wireless range and throughput is pretty bad, in my humble opinion when compared to the range on my Intel 3945 on my e1505

For example, I no longer get a connection from certain spots where I used to be just fine with my other machine.

Also transfer speed is horrible. I used to be able to stream video, now its closer to unplayable that it is playable. Will the 'n' update help this at all, even though I have no 'n' hardware?

Second question. Are there any decent scratchproof cases for my macbook pro?
I found some, but I read somewhere they don't work with the c2d models.

The n update "might" help but I doubt it since I don't think it does anything to affect the transmission/reception of 802.11 g. However, if you do decide to invest in n hardware, Apple's claims of it's performance and range are pretty accurate.

Sorry to hear about your range issues. Try placing your router in a different location. Keep it high and away from electrical and other obstacles.

The N update will not help you if you do not have N hardware. Make sure your system is up to date. 10.4.9 just came out, so do the update. It probably will not help but it is worth a shot.

Being brutally honest, the macbook pro's do suffer with wifi due to their aluminum design I still get excellent signal throughout my house tho, but if you are living in a mansion or just a big house you may have coverage issues if you have a lowend router.
