dell 640 not reading cpu properly?

Thread Starter
maybe my problem is unique. i have a dell 640m duo processor 2.0ghz laptop with 2 gigs of ram.

when i right click on MY COMPUTER and go to PROPERTIES some times it reads T2500 @ 2ghz , 2Ghz, 1.99 ram

other times it reads T2500 @ 997mhz , 2Ghz, 1.99 ram

as you can see sometimes it does not read one processor properly. i dont understand why, if i am making a big deal out of nothing, or if it is a symptom of processor failure. advise please.

thanks

Its speed stepping... which basically on battery power or when the system isnt overloaded steps the cpu down to a slower level to save battery life, u can disable it if u want by going into power options and turning it to "always on"

Correct it is "speedstepping" intel cpus are programmed to do that and that it is indeed perfectly normal. If you are using cpu-z to monitor stats you will be able to see the multiplier and speed increase and decrease depending on use. It will also detect that in fact you are using both cpus and it is in normal operation.
