Adding a third internal antenna for Intel 4965AGN

Thread Starter
I just got my new E1705 with Intel's 4965AGN adapter. I know that it supports 3 antennas for MIMO, however Dell has decided to only use two antennas.

It is worth the effort to add an additional antenna? I have seen them on eBay for under $20.

Any harm in adding a third antenna?

Thanks..

I haven't done any research on the new Intel ABN chipset, but I would have to say you should be able to hook up the extra antenna with no problem. Of course by doing this, you wouldn't be FCC compliant anymore - not that anybody will probably care. I have considered doing this to my notebook for some time also, and adding a detachable antenna to the back side of the case, but just never accumulated the parts to do so. Just remember if you cut the case to accomodate an external antenna, the likelihood of getting a warranty exchange on the whole system goes out the window - but that only applies if you have complete care anyway...

If you do it, make sure to document it and show us the final mod when you are done!

Search "U.FL" you should get some hits and find Antennas listed

I have used some from Enay Sellers with good results when I have added Wireless options to laptops with out a factory Antenna

I was also looking to replace my Dell 1500 cause the 802.11n doesn't work , never found much info on that 3rd antenna except that someone placed it under the keyboard , not sure if it's safe to the rest of the computer parts(radiation) , but if you are going for it I'll be happy to hear your results.

i got a Dell E1505, everything been super until i formatted my PC to ged rid of all the crap that came with it. so all drivers were automatically updated except the wireless network card. i got Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN. i downloaded the driver from intel. BUT i can see that it's not the way it used to be. before formatting, when connecting to an access point, even if the signal strength was 3 bars, when connected the signal strength is max. but now, if the signal strength is 3 bars when connected it'll still be 3 bars.

what's with the 3 antennas? how to know how many antennas i got?

thx for the help guys

I have an Inspiron 6400 with an Intel 3945ABG and want to upgrade it to the 4965AGN. To do this, do I just open the laptop up and simply remove the 3945 placed under the keyboard and replace it with the 4965AGN. Its just i keep hearing the term mini card being thrown around and thought that refered to the express slot on the side???

Its a PCI Express slot, which you have. and yes just replace the 3945.

Of course make sure you remove the old driver and have the new one ready to install.

Ok but just to clarify do I replace the internal card inside and under the keyboard (as I suspect) or do you just have to stick it in the express slot on the side (I doubt it). Just to clarify because if it can’t be done internally I won’t bother.
