Question about 64-bit vs. 32-bit.

I just bought a new HP dv2000t with a Centrino Core 2 Duo at 1.83 Ghz, 2Gs Ram, Windows Vista Premium -- and I thought this was 64-bit, but when I look at my system properties it says, "32-bit operating system?" -- What does this mean?

Do I have a 64-bit system?

And where is the place to find an easy explanantion of the difference betwen 32 and 64-bit?

Whole systems are not 64 bit per se. Your cpu is 64 bit, and your OS is 32 bit. Vista comes in both 32 and 64 bit flavors. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c...64-bit&spell=1

So Vista Premium is 32-bit? But my system is 64-bit. What Vista edition is 64-bit and how does that make it different.

This is kind of confusing.

Every Vista version comes in either 32 or 64 bit. You got the 32 bit version of Vista Home Premium. You system is not 64 bit, it's your cpu that is 64 bit.

You can either google or look on the microsoft webpage to see the differences between 32 and 64 bit Vista. But as of right now, 64 bit will give no benefit because there is very little software that is written in 64 bit. So there's really no reason to get 64 bit Vista right now unless you plan on having more than 3gbs of ram.

You can reload it as 64bit if you have an actual Vista cd and not just the manufacturer's cd. All Vista cd's(as far as I know) have both the 32bit and 64bit versions on it, you choose which one you want to install. I have been using both 64bit and 32bit Vista Ultimate and I can say without a doubt that the 64bit version is faster. OTOH though it is more frustrating with drivers. I'd say stick with 32bit for a while longer and wait until more drivers are released for 64bit Vista. This year should see more of a push towards 64bit, hopefully.

are you sure about that? I was told that it does not. Especialy Ultimate, which comes with just 1 DVD.

The 32bit and 64bit versions are sold on separate DVDs. But the cdkey will be usable and will activate on any of the aforementioned versions. On top of that, it will be usable and activate on any language. As long as it is used with the same build. (ie: Home Premium x64 english will work with Home Premium x86 french but will not work with Ultimate or Business etc)

Windows Vista Home Basic N (x86)
Windows Vista Home Premium (x86)
Windows Vista Business (x86)
Windows Vista Business N (x86)
Windows Vista Ultimate (x86)
Windows Vista Starter (x86)
