Excuse me for any typos in this i have not proofread this......
Id like to start this review off with a big thanks to Alienware and its staff for building me such an amazing machine!
Upon opining the beautifully packaged box i seen an extrememly shiney and silky smooth computer, i mean to tell you i have handled alot of laptops and i have yet to see one that matches this one in build quality and its surface finish even after a few days of using it it still simply amazes me.
Build Quality --10--
I gave this machine a 10 in build quality because:
there is absolutly nothing that creeks, wobbles or makes funny noises on this machine, the finish as stated before is absolutly gorgous and smooth, the keyboard doesnt flex at all nor does the screen. There is one flimsy device that stands out and thats the optical drive, but i still give this machine a 10 because a flimsy drive is not alienwares fault and does not hinder the quality of this machine in any way.
Battery Life --8--
First off i rated the battery life on this machine in terms of what kind of laptop it is. This is a desktop replacement with a 17 inch screen and some pretty mighty hardware so i rated according.
Using the desktop normally, surfing the web, msn messenger, ect i can easily get 1:45 to 2 hours out of this thing which is pretty good considering what its pushing, gaming on the otherhand drags it down to about an hour to an hour and 15 min, but i dont game on this thing unless its plugged in anyway, for what it is the battery life is exeptional, if i was rating on battery without considering what it is, i would probably give it a 4.
Port Placement --10--
Alienware really shows class here, evenly laying out the ports on this machine, the usb port on the left side is a real quirk if you are right handed and dont want the usb for the mouse poking you in tight spaces. I have found no problems with the ports or their placement.
Screen Quality --10--
The screen quality on this machine is exceptional, compared to my IBM 15.4 inch thinkpad, the alienware makes it look horible. Even opting for the lower end screen there is plenty of real estate for me i mean this thing is fin huge, gives me plenty of space without making me squint, and games run great. Another thing to point out is how bright this baby is and you can see it from almost any angle. NO DEAD PIXELS
Asthetics --10--
The appearance of this mighty machine is absolutly jaw dropping, when you turn it on the bright blue lights dazzle your eyes along with the beautifull glowing alienhead and alienware logo on the case. The keyboard is very appealing with the clearish keys along with the numpad making it a fullsize keyboard. The black panel under the screen adds a very nice touch to the laptop, the silver buttons which are flush against the black panel have a very sturdy feel to them when you press them, and all of them work
Performance --NR--
Im giving this a Not Rated for right now because i havent had a chance to run any benchmarks on it, but i have thrown a few games on it and tried them out. It has a little trouble with rainbow six vegas when you turn the AA and AF to 4x, it also strugles when you have the blur turned on in the settings, i just ordered my 2 gigs of ram from newegg so i will retest this when i receive them. I will also run 3dmark and a few other benchmark programs. But for now, vista's built in benchmark reads as follows
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7400 @ 2.16GHz 5.1 4.5 Determined by lowest subscore Memory (RAM) 1.00 GB 4.5 Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 5.9 Gaming graphics 511 MB Total available graphics memory 5.5 Primary hard disk 60GB Free (93GB Total) 5.0
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...WM=5.9&D3D=5.5
(explanation of the scores)
Again im going to say this is probably the best laptop i have ever handled and ive never been so pleased with a computer purchase. Even with 1 gig of ram it runs vista flawlessly without the slightest hicup.
Issues:
I have experienced 0 issues with this computer as of now, right out of the box everything was ready to go, all the ports work, all the buttons work, everything is working properly.
I have noticed one thing, it does tend to get very warm under the right wrist and blows extremely warm air out the rear exhaust but that just means the cooling is working fantasticly
If you are planning on, or in the process of ordering a new m5790 feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you want more photos
