Toshiba A135 S2246 headphones built in speakers

Hello all I am new to the forum and have a question.

I have Ubuntu linux running on the laptop listes above and everything runs excellent. When I plug headphones to listen to a CD or watch a movie the built in speakes stay on. On a plane or in a car that can irritate others. Is there a way to switch off the built in speakers when you have headphones plugged in? Is there a switch somewhere?

Thanks

Are you sure ur plugging the headphones in the right jack? Cuz that usually turns off the speakers. Can you hear sound from both the speakers and the headphones?

Yes, I hear sound from both the headphones and speakers. I would think that the plugging in of the headphones would shut off the built in speakers.
