Screen Types? UXGA, WXGA+, SXGA, SXGA+, ETC..

Hi. New to the forum, thanks for reading.

I'm about to drop some cash on a Sager or Hypersonic. But I don't knw anything about these different screen types.

What's the difference between SXGA and SXGA+? UXGA? WXGA+? Why does MagicRobin hate widescreen so much? What's better about SXGA?

I'm leaning toward the 8790 (17" WXGA+). I'll be using it for media creation (Avid Xpress Pro, After Effects, Direcotr, etc), as well as playing Star Wars Galaxies.

Is the problem with widesceen that when gaming, pixel interprolation would occur? Couldn't I just run the game in windowed mode?

Thanks for helping.

Edit: Model # Corrected to 8790.

8890 is 15" or 16"
8790 is 17" WXGA

Just want to make sure you don't order the wrong model thinkin' it's something else

The differences refer to max screen resolution. Anyone correct me if I am wrong. .

So I've done a little more researching, and as far as I can tell, the different acronyms merely indicate a difference in maximum screen resolution. To add to Moxie's list:

UXGA 1600x1200
WXGA+ 1440x900
SXGA+ 1400x1050

MagicRobin hates widescreen because he's interested in a screen who's native resolution matches the optimal resolution of his game(s).

I play Star Wars Galaxies in 1600x1200, so a UXGA would be great for that. But I hate having my Windows desktop at 1600x1200. Can lower resoltuions not be used on these screens? Or would I get poor image quality at 1280x1024?

What will happen if I try to run Galaxies on a WXGA at 1440x900?

Thanks.

SXGA, particularly in 16" produces a large enough font so that you can comfortably surf those web pages that use ultra small fonts without going blind.

For some of us that are already half blind SXGA is a very usable resolution. For the young whippersnappers who have 50/50 vision and don't mind having their noses 3 inches away from the screen UXGA is great (yeah right but I am biased).

Wide format (as against wide viewing angle) LCD's have extra horizontal pixels and often look like letter boxes (16:10 ratio) ie. they are longer than they are higher. Non wide format screens have a 4:3 width to height ratio and look like a TV set.

If you are watching a lot of DVD's etc widescreen is for you. I prefer vertical height to horizontal width so widescreens are not my choice.

ok pro's and cons of widescreen..

I love my widescreen's native resolution... I have no knowledge of how to set the resolution lower because all the options in windows are not true ratio splits from the orriginal so it stretches the images, so I am having to get used to working in the higher resolution of this bad boy... I design websites so usually design for 800x600 res... no real big deal for me just different... For my appy's well if your always dealing with tons of pallets like I am which you post suggests you are, the wide screen is sweet for it... It gives you room for you project to be opened to full screan of a 3:4 ratio and room on the side for the pallets... as for games many more these days support widescreen, there is a thread on it in this forum somewhere with a link of supported games and fixes for ones that are not supported and so on... my neverwinter looks awsume on this machine.... if this helps... and you get it double cool with the 8790... wish I had 300 extra bucks... lol

The upcoming "big name" games such as HL2, Doom3, etc. will all support widescreen resolutions. With the ones that don't, all that happens is black bars are displayed on the left and right of the widescreen, effectively turning it into a 3:4 screen. As Kesh says, there's a thread on this (it's even got pics of the "black bars" effect).
