Install Vista, after install do a windows update, check device manager for items not installed, find the drivers & install them. I believe one of the Acer utilities will do a bios update from Windows. I have an Aspire 5102 so I do not know what Acer has for your model

Flash your BIOS out of XP first. The BIOS flash is Windows based. It'll be safer then out of Vista for the time being. Then install Vista and then install the latest ATI drivers from the ATI website. Everything else with the exception of card reader will be detected and the right drivers will be auto installed. Make sure you grab the latest Wifi drivers from the Windows Update after the Vista install, otherwise your wifi led on the front of the laptop will not function correctly as it does in XP. If you want you can also run the lastest Realtek drivers from their own website... it works well also in Vista.
