programming on laptop - screen issue

Thread Starter
Hi, I am programmer (Java mostly) and I spend a lot of time just looking at the editor (Eclipse usually) coding.

I am wondering if to get 15" SXGA+ or
15.4" WSXGA+ display?

Would wide screen be a helpful asset or an annoying problem?

Any ideas / experiances of other developers?

Sincerely,

wrong sections but oh well...... here goes

The wide screen is great for a few features, ie: more horizontal code fits on a screen so less side to side scrolling albeit this is at the cost of less vertical code. But it also benefits the ability to have larger/more toolboxes open on the sides that dont interfere with your actual code screen!!
As there are other bennefits outside of coding w/ the wide screen, and that almost every laptop is already there or quicly moving to the wide aspect, you might as well jump on board.

As far as resolution goes, the higher resolution means more lines of code on the screen which is good, on the other hand it is VERY small, and your eyestrain will KILL you. You will end up having to manually bump your fonts up to ease the eyestrain. That is if you really spend as much time coding as you purport. So imo go for the lower resolution screen, code doesnt care what size it is, but your eyes will.

im a java programmer. i have a WUXGA monitor on my HP dv8235nr notebook. the program is comfortable to look at for long periods of time. i havent had any problems using this monitor. although i use jgrasp for my programming.

You would certainly not have eye strain from a WSXGA notebook. I've used one for 4 years now and it's great. Unfortunately I will have to look elsewhere for a new machine because HP doesn't seem to offer it anymore.
