Gaming mouse questions

Thread Starter
I started shopping around for a mouse today even though I dont have my laptop ordered yet, so I guess this is a first step.
If I want the mouse primarily for gaming should I get a wireless mouse? Ive been using optical mice for the last couple years and so far I think they are great so I dont think I would go back to non-optical.
Some recommendations on some tried and tested mice for gaming would be appreciated.

Has anyone tried one of these "Microsoft Wireless 2.0 Optical Mouse"(I think Im hooked on Microsoft mice because they are all I have ever bought)

only mouse that is wireless that i heard was excellent for gaming with no lag time was the Logitech mx700. Personnally i don't like wireless so im going with teh Logitech mx500 and looking into the Razerzone mice which are designed specifically for gaming (site is www.razerzone.com )

I got microsoft's (dont know which one, but it was expensive wireless keyboard and mouse (on my desktop pc), but i'm not using the mouse as it is very bad, can't do slow and short movements with it (graphical editing for example).

I like to use mice with wires. The new logitech mx510 is designed for gaming so you could give that a try. It sure looks nice and has lots of buttons (a must for me).

i avoid microsoft products in general and i don't like oversized mice with with millions of buttons, so i went with a logitech mx300. same 800dpi optical engine as its big brothers, minus all the pointless fluff to get in the way. no batteries to go dead and no potential for wireless lag. i recommend *not* installing the logitech mouseware software because i found it just slows down some functions (like scrolling).

I have the MS mouse, and it works great, very smoth scrolling and comfortable on the hand.

Mice Suck

I switched to Opti Trackball 3 years ago and I will never go back to wrist wip-lashing mouse.

Designed for gaming. Just got it, love it. Check for reviews.

Razer is also coming out with an optical very soon. Has also gotten some good reviews

The Razer mice are pretty much considered the creme of the normal mouse crop for gaming -- though I believe them to be overpriced ... kind of like a "hey, they're hardcore gamers... they'll pay anything we brand properly" attitude. Can't beat their marketing though.

Logitech's newest offering for gaming mice, the MX510 is pretty much the king of the wired mainstream products. It is currently only available at Best Buy with a red color effect (widespread distribution next month -- in blue and red... I think I heard silver too but can't confirm.)

Full Disclosure: I bought an MX500 because it's black/silver. I didn't like the red and the Razers are too expensive.

DONT GO WITH MS!!!!

i got a logitech MX300 for $20 from bestbuy without rebates, and haven't looked back since! it allows me to kick butt in Unreal 2k4, and hasn't hiccupped ONCE!!!

it's got a 4MP optical sensor, so it is able to keep up with fast movements. it's the best mouse i've ever had.

Most likely was the MX310, if memory serves.

I have one of the original Boomslangs and loved it. The shape was perfect for the way I prefer to hold my mouse. I just sort of got hooked on opticals (no cleaning, no skipping)

As for the price thing, the retail price on the Razer Viper is pretty much the same as the MX510, like $50, though when I got mine BestBuy had a 39.99 special on. If you shop around you can probably get the Logitech for a little less. Probably have to pay full price on the Viper since I think there's only one place selling them

I got my MX510 at Bestbuy, but I think that they've gone into general distribution (or about to). If you do a Froogle search a lot of places come up. The Viper is still in the pre-sales stage, but the site says March. If they're going to make that then they have to start shipping in the next week.

I'm way more than happy with the 510, but I don't think you can go wrong with either. (I think the Viper looks a little cooler thoug... but the 510 has more buttons).

I personally can't stand either Microsoft mice or Logitech. The both are horrible in my opinion. They either are to big, too small, have too many buttons, or run off of AA batteries instead of recharables (sure you can put in recharagable AA's but then you don't have a docking station to recharge them with).

I swear by the Gyration mouse (non-pro). http://www.gyration.com/
The wireless, optical (non-trackball) mouse. Has a NiMH recharable battery and docking station to charge, a reciever to USB, 2 buttons and a scroll wheel. That's it, no unnecessary and clumsy side buttons, no oversized pad, no replacing batteries every few hours of use, and I can game for about 8 straight hours on one charge. Get extara battery w/ charging station and you have a back-up. This thing has 8 channels so you can change them in case of conflicts.

See datasheet here (PDF download):
http://www.gyration.com/files/datash...GP1000-001.pdf

http://www.gyration.com/ultragt.htm

This mouse has lightning fast response time with no detectable lag. Several of my friends and I play FPS's with this mouse with no problems. The best part is the wheel can be programed to switch weapons (scroll up/down) without messing up (scroll up/down and your view changes around), and when pressed, has a satifying "click" feeling and can be programed as a 3rd button (reload).

Oh, and did I mention the 30 foot range this thing has? In addition, it has a gyroscopic function that when you pick it up and hold down the button underneath the mouse still works (great for presentations or for moving around the room and playing).

Maximum PC magazine continues to reccommend the Logitech Mx700 as the only wireless mouse fast enough for gaming.

I bought one, and in concept, its design is very good. It moves smoothly, has forward/back thumb buttons, and it recharges.

But frankly, I hate it. It's much too big for my hand; neither my palm nor wrist nor arm touch the desk or mouspad while I'm using it, so it wears out my arm very quickly. The forward/back buttons and the main mouse buttond are so far forward that I can't comfortably reach them. After a half hour or so of using it, my wrist hurts badly.

I had to stop using it. It now lives on my other desk with my spare guest computer.

i think maximum pc has lost a little credibility after they were paid to show off go-l computers.

and i was mistaken, it is the 310. my cousin has the gyration, and i hate it. yea, it's cool when you first use it, but it's uncomfortable, i can't imagine playing video games with that remote control of a mouse. and the keyboard is just like a laptop keyboard, without the numpad!

i still am pushing for the Logitech MX310

I got a Logitech Mx900 Bluetooth mouse since I ordered an 8790 with the bluetooth option. Hope it works.

I hope it works for you too because that bluetooth stuff is pricey, but congrats on the purchase
I wont be able to order my 5680 for another 3 weeks or so...

I have the logitech mx700. Simply amazing. And I suggest an energizer rechargable battery station. energizer has a much higher mAh ratings than the crappy asian ones
they give you with it and will run the mouse a week and the keyboard 2 months without a recharge. You get about 15 ft. range for both keyboard/mouse, and the buttons are awesome.

I got UNiROSS 2000mAH rechargables in my camera, and believe it or not, i bought them december last year, taken about 40-50 photos and it is still working (havent charged them since purchase). They seem to be a lot more better/powerful than my old energizers.

Well, one of the world wide best Gaming-Mouse is the TerraTec Mystify Razor Boomslang 2500, which works with a precsion of 2500 dpi. Together with it's accompanied Mystify SpeedPad mousepad, it offered the fastest and most precsion turnarounds. - There is also a Mystify Razer Boomslang 2100 model available.

See:

The Razer Boomer Speed and Razer eXactMat from Razerzone are nearly the same as the 2100 dpi Terratec mouse and it's pad (these look only optical slightly different).
