Inspiron v Latitude - Page 2

Correct. Have a look below, top picture is of MR9700 (I9100/ XPS form factor), and below is a pic of the MR9600 (i8500/i8600/D800/M60 form factor).

As you would appreciate.... the M9700 is obviously not going to fit in the i8600 series and the MR9600 won't in the i9100 series.

But... but... I guess you're right.

Parallel and Serial are built on the graphics card eh?
Indeed. In fact the i9100 form factor has more in common with a desktop card than a traditional laptop one with the ports and all....

Rotate the MR9700 pic 90 degrees to the left - it might make interesting wallpaper for the double 'E's on the board.

How do you mean?

Electrical Engineers (BSEE) like hardware. I suggested rotating it so that the Dell stamp is readable without cocking one's head to the side.

Then again, I was just being a wise-a$$

lol, fair enough.

Questions:

1. Is it hard to change the video cards in the D800/M60? (sidenote-I have never done something to that effect, but I am pretty good in following instructions and putting things together and apart)

2. Is it hard to change the casings on the i8600 give the above sidenote?

3. Lastly, on the i8600 does the graphite silver casing include the silver trim on the keyboard?

3). The trim around the keyboard is blue. Some people think it looks cheap, but I think it looks fine.

Does Dell make any notebooks with a metal chassis? I thought some of the latitudes were, but it appears they arn't as you say they are flimsy. My friend has a powerbook, and I assume you all hate apples, but that is a damn nice alluminum assembly.

Ad 1 & 2: See the service manual for M60

1. See the service manual as KCK suggested, or alternatively there is also a guide here for replacing the video card in the i8600 (same procedure for the D800 and M60).

2. You mean a full chassis swap with the D800? See Spiikes chassis conversion in this thread.

3. No. All the Graphite Swirl kit is is a plastic cover that snaps over the top of the LCD backing. To get a silver or different coloured surround for the keyboard you would need to either paint them, or do the chassis conversion mentioned above.

Thanks for the reply. When configuring the systems, the i8600 and the D800 are similarly priced. I am not sure if it's even worth it to go through the chasis switch, etc. I'll likely end up going with the D800 unless there is a good discount on the M60 whenever I make the purchase.
As I said many times before, instead of trusting the web prices for M60, it's better to talk with a Dell rep (in the US, just say you own a small company to qualify for the Small Business sector). If your negotiating skills are good enough, you may get a very nice deal vs D800.

I like Apple's material too and how elegant it looks, including the light on the cover.

I feel that the blue around the keyboard makes the laptop look better rather than having it all be gray.
True the two-tone does add a bit, its just the colour they chose IMO looks a little "tacky". The silver used for it on the Latitude and Precision lines still offer contrast but match up much better, another good choice I think would have been a black or another dark colour.

regardless of how much anyone hates the blue, its still 100 times better than IBM's styling. New laptops look like they are from 1988.

hmmm
at the time when i was murdering my sales rep...
i got the

$3700 I8600 + ati9600 + 1gb ram + backpack
$3800 m60 + fx1000 + 512 ram + some kinda 3yr warranty ($4500ish web price)

1.6Ghz, 7600hd, blah blah blah
the rest of the specs were the same
