MBP Installing Parallels with XP Pro- Any Tips?

Hi, 3-12-2007

I hope you might be able to help me head off any problems I might have when I install Parallels on my MBP. I'd really appreciate "learning" from your experience instead of having to encounter problems myself. I've had a stroke & if things go pretty smoothly, I'm Okay, but trouble stops me in my tracks. Here's my equipment & what I want to do:

17" MacBook Pro, 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive Journaled HFS+
Parallels Desktop for Mac
Acer Ferrari 4005 running Windows XP Professional

These computers are connected, within my house, using a network that first tries to connect via Ethernet, if it doesn't find an Ethernet cable on a computer then it'll connect the computers using a wireless connection where necessary.

What I'd like to do is, get a copy of the Ferrari's hard drive into Parallels Desktop using my network. I have all the installation disks for my Ferrari. The main reason for this is because I have 3 children in the Army and all of the Army communication programs only run on PC's and are presently set-up on the Ferrari with government secure access accounts, etc. So if I can just "move everything over" from the Ferrari to the MacBook Pro, it'll be a lot simpler for me. My family computer "Guru" is in Afghanistan right now.

Any suggestions, recommendations or help will be greatly appreciated.

you would want to use GHOST and sysprep to accomplish this task. If you are not a 'computer person' sysprep is likely out of your grasp, tbh. You can try to install using the acer discs, however it is a license violation and will also likely look for some specific acer call.

If you try to just clone the acer drive over, it will fail, you would HAVE to sysprep it as the last step before the clone image was made.

I won't go into any more detail until you can confirm you are capable of sysprep. You would also likely want to discuss the implications with your government technologist as there may be fallout to doing what you propose depending on the security methods used (is it tied to MAC address, etc)

Hi, 3-31-07

Sorry it took a while to get back to you. My brother had open heart surgery yesterday.

I 'am' a "computer person" & although I'm not familiar with 'sysprep', I'll probable be able to deal with it. I do all my own maintainance & 'everything' on the 6 desktop & laptops, we have eithornet ( first) - wirelessly (second) networked, here - together- in the house, along with the accosiated printers (3 PC's, 3 Mac's).

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you, Wayne

Parallels does include a tool that will assist you in transferring your current windows install on a system over to a VM. You can so this from a local machine or for another machine on your network. It is pretty straightforward, but does take a little bit of time.

I did try using the built in tool which should allow me to create a "migrated" Parallels machine from my Ferrari. My MBP connects to the Ferrari but then an error message comes up on the Ferrarai saying
"Paralells has encountered an error and must now shut down."

After receiving that error, I've quite all programs on both computers, shut them both down, then restarted them and tried the process again, --but I get the same error message. I've tried this several times.

I've checked my Ethernet connections & it's good & stable to both computers thru my network.

Any other help and advice will be appreciated.

Thanks, Wayne
