cool. not a bad price either, although the only reason I would want it is so I could put more games on my internal drive and that's hard to justify.

thats a great price. . now I just have to find a place to buy one.

Good price. alot lower than I expected.

Fantastic! now I can fit 60 more GB of porn!

i've definitely been waiting for this... and that price, even if it is a bit higher, is still decent. it's so much lower than even the 160gb 5400rpm drives when they came out. i'll finally be able to install all my games and have them on here at the same time... 60gb is just not enough for a dual boot with lots of games and other school-related software... cycling installs of games is a hassle...

At least wait for the benchmarks

Dammit to hell, they need to release an ATA100 160. Fujitsu and Seagate are going exclusively SATA - hopefully Hitachi sees the ATA100 market and makes two models.

why would i need a benchmark to tell me what i already assume will be the case? it's going to be a bit faster in transfer speeds than the 100gb 7200rpm, and have faster seek times than the 160gb 5400rpm with faster speeds. i figured i'd wait for something to come out to either give me more space or lower the prices of current stuff.

whether i get the 100gb or the 160gb, it will really depend on the price and availability, unless of course the benchmarks say something along the lines of "95% failure rate with abnormally low transfer rates, not recommended at all"

Doh I forgot the Gen 2 is ATA. Is there an adapter or something that will work (and fit)?

Hopefully the 'Dell Exclusive' on this drive won't be long so we can buy it elsewhere.

Model #'s:
ST9160823AS
ST9160823ASG (G-Force Protection feature included)

Anyone know if the 1710 allows for SATA/300 or are we limited to the SATA/150? Sure would be nice to take advantage of the faster drive...
I don't think SATA-150 is saturated in even desktop drives.

The areal density of these new drives is twice that of my current 7k100, so unless there is some massive flaw in the seek performance of this drive, it should smoke my current setup. This and a T7200 will be the last upgrades for my e1705.

Great... they finally release a decent capacity HD just as I am selling my lappy...

Figures.

I hope they release an ATA100 version.
I sent Seagate an email, asking if they plan on making a ATA100 version.

Everyone else should do the same, if you want an ATA100 version of this harddrive. I'm sure if they recieve a few thousand emails asking about an ATA100 version, they'll do it.
