Very low voice sound on DVD's

I've been playing DVD's on my laptop and noticed that the peoples voices are extremely quiet while music playing in the background is pretty loud. It's not that only 1 disc does this, but many DVD's do on my computer...does the DVD drive need to be replaced?

Naw, your DVD drive shouldn't need to be replaced. It is simply reading the 1's and 0's on your dvds and if your getting video and music then your drive is fine. Your player software is what decodes the 1's and 0's into the appropriate video and audio streams.

I would look at your software and how the audio is configured. It kinda sounds like the center channel is not being reproduced properly, and the R/L and surrounds are overshadowing it.

What software are you using? And what kind of speaker setup do you have?

I would recommend a player like WinDVD or PowerDVD(others will prolly chime in with other suggestions). Both have(its been a while since I've used either) lots of sound options, like Dolby Headphone Surround and such. I've tried using Windows Media Player for playing dvds and have always come away frustrated with its lack of functionality.

Anywho, back to windows media player. I would look to see if there is some sort of surround sound settings, and make sure it is set to stereo. It really sounds like you are just listening to your right and left channels, and the center channel is not being reproduced. This would result in voices being very quiet and the music being very loud.

Has this always been a problem? Or did it just start recently? Maybe we can track it back to a setting that's been changed.

This has always been a problem, ever since I first got my 9400, it's done this, however my 9300 did not have this problem. I fixed up my speaker settings in WMP, i'll attempt to run a DVD tomorrow to see if it fixes it

Use a differnt player. I had this issue on certain divx files, where the ambience would be much louder than the voices. I think running it in videolan worked for me, that or "mplayer Classic" (looks like mplayer2 but can add rm and quicktime codecs) cause I pretty much only use those two.

also with media player classic, you can "boost" the volume up to 400% or something if its still too low although it will boost all of the voume so maybe you won't want to do that

As long as you set your aduio config to 2.1 Surround sound as opposed to 5.1 you should be fine in any DVD.

i had the same problem, it all started when i installed a codec pack (k-lite). and rushed through install... problem is, theres a part where u need to choose your speaker config. the default is 5.1 i believe so that led to the low voices. just run your codecs config, and set it back to 2.1. just to be sure, also check the windows speaker config.
