Looking for a gaming laptop

First post here lol..

Ok, so I'm looking for a nice laptop thats under $2000 (my max is $2300), that can handel the latest games with good (50+)fps, and can handel games good for the next few years. So far its come up to either the Sager NP5760 (http://www.powernotebooks.com/catego...111#id1415) or the Aviator MT7 (http://secure.hypersonic-pc.com/scri...id=Aviator_MT7)

I'm a pretty hardcore gammer, and I like the play F.E.A.R., q4, doom3, halflife2, and most of the current fps games. The only thing I don't like about the hypersonic notebook is that it has a Go 7600 512MB, and the sager has the top of the line nvidia geforce 7950GTX.

If you could find a better laptop, post it here, or a laptop that has these specs.

Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz+
1GB DDR2+
15-17Inch screen
nvidia geforce 7600+ (mostly want a 7950GTX)
80GB+ 5400RPM or 7400RPM hard drive

anything around those specs would be great, thanks.

Hmm..I looked into getting a M1710, but i don't really want one because its kinda just an expensive system for bragging rights because of the light shows and everything. I think I'm gunna go with the Dell Inspiron E1705, what do you guys think of that with these specs?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)

FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium with 1GB of memory

17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display

2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz

160GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive

FREE!8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability

256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS

Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition

How will the go7900GS stand up against the games I want to play (i like eyecandy and 50+fps lol)

F.E.A.R.
Quake IV
Doom 3
Unreal Tournament 2004 (bought it a while ago, but it won't run well 8fps on my current system, p4 1.4Ghz, 256MB pc800 ram, geforce 2 64mb ultra)
Unreal Tournament 2007 (dont really care, but it would be awesome haha)
Counter Strike: Source

And just wondering, how much fps will I get in this older game (i know it'll be good, just wondering.

Quake III?

Offtopic: How do i post? I can only do quick replies

Hmm..I found out that the 7900GS won't run fear very well..around 30-60 fps..i wanted like 50-100+ hmm..maybe i should stick with getting the sager? that has a really good processor and gfx card, and its almost the same amount of money.

Is the 7950GTX 512MB really good for games like fear?

Thanks for the help, I'm planning on starting to work and I want to know how much hours i need to work to get the laptop in like a year. So far i've gotten around $2450 with 20 hours a month and 50 hours a month over the summer. So i guess my maximum ammount to spend would be around $2500. But i want to get it as quick as possible haha, I also want good battery life, because I don't want to be connected to a wall all day lol. This is what I picked out in the sager 5760 that is around $2400.

17" Screen
C2D 4MB L2 Cache 2GHz
Nvidia GeForce Go 7950GTX PCI-Express 16x 512MB
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 @ 667Mhz
120GB ( SATA 5400rpm)
XP Home (HATE vista)

I have another question, right now im on a pentium IV 1.4Ghz with 256MBs of rambus memory, and a geforce 2 64mb ultra, will this laptop be like a god laptop to me haha?

Sorry for the wicked long post

sorry but .why would you want to run at 50-100 fps when 30-60 will be same to your eye? i am just curious. i thought human eye couldnt see anything higher than 30fps
post #6 of 28
You can. Actually it depends on the person. So much is subjective, (I know people who can't even see screen flicker! like when your refresh rate is 60hz on a CRT). You can't see higher than 60 though.

I can tell up to 60, past that, It doesn't feel any different. 40 is pushing it, 50 is fine, and 60 is smooth to me. I'd much rather play with better frame rates than prettier graphics.

I'd consider the E1705 on Outlet... what you configured comes out to be about $1300. No that is not anywhere near the price of the Sager

I have a 7900gs and I am pretty sure I can run fear at 60+FPS with max eye candy on my Toshiba.

Dell XPS 1710, Alienware Area 51 5790, Alienware m9750 (hasn't came out yet but SLI 7950 GTX's with C2D), Hypersonic CX7, ect.

ForceCalibur is on to the truth about framerates. The average human eye cannot make out framerates greater than 30fps, but it can be trained (like by playing lots of games) to see a little higher. However, the real truth is that the framerates higher than 30 translate into smoother human input. Your reflexes can react at speed far greater than 30fps allows, so even if your eye cannot sense a difference in display, your body will feel the lag that results from slower verification of input. it's subtle, but very real. Racing games a great example of this because it's activity that translates into real world experience for most adults. If you play a good racing game at 30fps, there is a good chance you will feel laggy steering as your intitutive action is limited by slower input allowances. 60+ fps is a great rule of thumb for racing games, but also for seasoned players of any other type of action/reaction game. The hand IS quicker than the eye. And realistically, most people like ForceCalibur who claim they can see up to 60 fps really can't, but they can feel it, and have become "trained" to visualize the input lag. If he watched a movies at 24, or 30, or 60 frames persecond (assuming the very same timeline), he most likely wouldn't be able to tell a difference. However, as soon as he is "hooked into" the movie, and his action causes on-screen validation, he will become keenly aware of the lack of fluidity.

If you are going to buy a sager look in the dell outlet. for 2800.00 you get a nice XPS.
Personally I can distinguish 100fps easily. But I found a smooth 40+fps is good enough for me in most cases.

Too bad you are fund limited. I have a supersystem with dock f/s... but I want at LEAST 3k for it.

Thanks for all the replies. I said i want 50-100 fps, because to me, playing with under 50fps just sucks, its laggy, and sometimes it gets to a slideshow. My eyes can distinguish the difference between 30fps and 50+fps easly. And if you get around 30fps in current games, you'll only be able to play new games for a few months before you have to kill the eyecandy.

Would the batterylife be really low? And do you think i should get a different one with a 2GHz C2D and 2GB ram, but a 200GB 4200rpm hdd and a 7900GS?
I agree with a lot of people here. Dell E1705 from outlet is probably your best bet. But I play most PC games on low settings @ 20-30 Fps, and anything above 30 would be perfect. I don't see how you people don't like it if its not above 40 fps.
I wouldn't go with that Toshiba. First I would atleast go with C2D 2.0 ghz, and if want 50-100 FPS then your gonna need 2 GB of Ram. Go with E1705

I don't want a used notebook, what about a 2Ghz C2D, 2GB DDR2, 200GB 4200rpm(i think its 4200..its the one with the 4 in it..maybe 4500) hdd, and a nvidia geforce go 7900GS for $2000?

I can't play a game if i dont get at least 50fps, its just how i play my games. Usualy when I don't get 50+fps, the game runs kinda like a quick slideshow and its not fun, and if you get that with the current games, you only have like 6months until you need an update

This is what i got when i configured the dell 1705 with the stuff i want, im most likely gunna go to this, since it was a few bucks over $2000

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7400 (2.16GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)

FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium with 1GB of memory

17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ TFT Display with TrueLife™(glossy)

2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz

FREE! 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability

256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS

Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition

9-cell Primary Battery and 9-cell additional Lithium Ion Battery

Dell Wireless 1390b/g (54Mbps)

Anything I should upgrade? Also, Whats the difference between the 6-cell battery and the 9-cell..is it really worth around $130? What will my battery life be?
well that Dell looks fine

the only thing you might consider to "maximize" your notebook is hard drive. 5400 is bit slower than 7200 RPM..so add $60 more and get 100GB 7200RPM if you are going for the "flawless gaming" thing...

Will it be able to play F.E.A.R. on high settings @ 1024x768 resolution (i just like that one lol, always use it :P)...with 50+fps?

What does 5400rpm and 7400rpm have a difference in? Is it noticable, or just better to brag about xD
post #18 of 28
i've got the same E1705 with same graphics and processor, same amount of ram but mine is 533 not the 667. the max res that fear extraction point offered was like 1600x1200 i think. i played with the resoulution at max, ever eye candy option maxed, and 4x filtering got an average of around 45-50 fps on the time demos. i experienced no lag at all, no even in big firefights! i've played both fear games, half life 2 (both) including lost coast, swat 4, doom 3, and nothing has slowed this system down yet! the only game that lagged was rainbow six lockdown, but my understanding is that the game isnt really coded well for pc's. i think you would be very pleased with the dell.

i just noticed that my config is the same as the first dell config you listed, not the second. i dont think the processor would make too much of a difference however.

Thanks for the comment. I'm gunna buy that laptop for sure, since i can tell that i can pull off maybe 70+fps on 1024x768 with all the eye candy (yay) and stuff. Now all I need to do is make $2000, I can do it by working, which I'm gunna start in mid april. I figured out that by working 30 hours a month that I can make $2000 in ~9 months, so I can probably get the laptop in mid January which is awesome lol.

Whats filtering do? I always see that in the reviews that i read.

Last to questions and than im gunna save up and buy it lol..

1) Do you really think its worth $150 more to get the 2.16GHz instead of the 2GHz?
2) This is just gunna sit in the house and maybe come into different rooms with me when I use it (Theres no way i'll use it near drinks), Do you think I need a warrenty? No one will steal it, and I won't accidentaly break it, The warrenty is like $500, and that'll make it an even longer time that i'll have to wait to get it, so far it came out to $1800 with everything the best except for a 2GHz processor instead of a 2.16GHz.
