Advice when sending laptop in for repairs

Hello,

Just looking for a little advice. I have a Acer aspire 5650 laptop and have recently been building up problems. First of all the power connection was getting a bit dodgy then the whole AC adapter went it made a funny noise and there was no light and it stopped working. I bought it less than a year ago so i am presuming they will take it in and repair it all free of charge. Also some of the keyboard buttons are a bit dodgy.

Im just wondering about all my private data on the laptop ? I also do not have the original instalation on there and as far as i know i never had restore disks . Do i take out the hard drive from the laptop before sending it of ?

If anyone could give me any help that would be great !

Thanks

They may wipe your hard drive back to default, but I don't think you can get service without sending the entire thing. Your best bet, backup

often they will wipe the drive back to its factory fresh settings and installation so that means you should back up all your personal data before sending it in and if you are really worried delete it from the drive after you back it up so that it cant be viewed while its in the shop.

I did the same when I sent my laptop in for repair just to be safe.

But after a mobo swap, I still had my initial hard drive intact with the same OS.

But if u have a 3rd party hard drive, you should take it out.

i have a hell of a lot of stuff to back up ! and i can't actually get into the laptop becuase the battery is dead and the charger is nackard.

adinu when you sent your laptop back did you take out the hard drive ? Did they mind ? I do not see any reason why I need to send back the hard drive as well because there is nothing wrong with the hard drive.

But im not too sure

Difficult situation

They might tell you the computer isn't working because there is no harddrive and just send it back to you without any repairs?

If you have another computer in your house, then you can get an external enclosure, attach the HDD from your Aspire to it, which will let you access all your data from another computer, therefore letting you back it up.

Agreed. Call them up and tell them you are concerned about your private information and would like to remove the hard drive. If they say yes, tape a note to the top of your laptop saying "Hard drive removed - talked to Acer support and said it was ok." Or something to that extent. If they say no, which I can't imagine they'd do, maybe a friend wouldn't mind you swapping HDD's and pulling all your stuff off, then delete If you're worried after deleting your things, use this tool, which is freeware -- its called Eraser and the DOD (Department of Defense) uses this to wipe files from their PC's. We've been required to use it in our organization as well. Call me paranoid? Good luck!
