Windows XP crashes on F3JP

Hello to all,

There is some software which is causing windows xp Crash randomly on my F3jp.
I am trying all the possibilities to find out what causes it.
Until now I have not found the reason.

The crash happens very randomly, but every time the same symptoms:

All the icons for the programs disappear. Instead of the icon pictures I have only black empty boxes.
It is not possible to load any program. Windows does not respond.
If for example the internet explorer was open when this happened than if I click on something nothing happens. I can type test though but I cannot for example use search.
Same thing with windows explorer pressing any icon does not do anything.
All the programs stop responding.

When I try to launch any program, I get an error message "Not enough quata is available to process this command".
If I press Ctrl+Alt+del, I am not able to launch Task manager it says that system is out of resources.

When I log out and login again than everything works again.

I have thought this might be due to virtual memory so I have increased the size.
I have also tried with uninstalling many of the softwares I am using.
The event log also does not show anything special that could indicate what is causing this error.

This is really driving me crazy.

Any suggestions would be nice. Thanks in adcance.

Here are my system specs:

ASUS F3JP-AP029M (Windows XP MCE)
Intel Core2Duo T7200
Kingstone RAM DDR2 2GB @667MHz
ATI x1700 VRAM 256MB
Display 15.4" WXGA TFT (1280x800)
HD SATA 160GB

Try Downloading Spybot : Search and Destroy
Because this might be an Virus or a spyware problem. I had that happen to me a few times when i did not had proper protection.
Also if you want to check your system for Viruses try getting Avast the program is free and easy to use and quite efficent so dont worry.
If you do not wish to install any program try running The Avast Online Scanner

Good luck m8.

EDIT: BTW see if this is related to a memory corruption also. Run an mem intensive app to see if the mem is also the problem.

Hello, Thank you for the reply. I think that there is no virus or spyware on my system. I am using Kaspersky AV 6, Spysweepr 5.3 and Zonealarm pro. I have already done a scan for viruses, and for the spyware but without any significant result except for a couple of spy cookies. I will try to run memtest over the night, as you suggested it could be one of the ram modules causing the problem.

Ok try going into your Control Panel and increase the Virtual Memory Size

BTW here is how Microsoft descrbes the problem

Hi,

I have already done that before some days ago, but the problem is still there.

a couple possibilities:

1.) Kaspersky & Zone Alarm may be interfering with each other.

2.) It could be a coding error that sometimes happens if you've got 2GB of RAM. here's more info: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909095

Thanks for the reply. I have tried with uninstalling Kaspersky before but the problem showed up after a day or so. I will try the hibernation hotfix from microsoft, maybe it is some how similar problem. I see the crash about once per day every time I am doing something different. What was commen in many of the situations, I had Outlook 2003 and Internet explorer 7 running almost every time. Maybe it is some problem with IE 7. I will try next also to use firefox only than I will see if it has somehow to do with IE7.

There are several possible Outlook issues as well, so you could either look that up in the Microsoft knowledge base or try using a different e-mail program to see if that makes it stop

Hello guys,

Thanks for all the help.
I think I found out what was causing windows to crash.
It seems that the latest version of Smarty Uninstaller (v1.7), an application I used to uninstall programs, had a bug.

Last sunday it has killed my windows XP when I tried to uninstall a program.
Even going to the safe mode was not possible.
Repair using the Windows CD worked but many programs stopped running once the windows was repaired.
I made a fresh instalation of my system some weeks ago.
I was lucky that I have produced an image of my operating system when I installed it. This helped me to bring my system back to life, but I had to install all the applications as this image was made for XP without applications.
