Inspiron 6000 cpu and ram question

Hi everyone

I currently have an inspiron 6000 with a celeron m 1.4 ghz cpu and 512 mb of ram. The cpu is overclocked to ~1.8 Ghz (is this what everyone calls the "pin mod"?). My question is, can I replace the celeron m with a pentium m. I want to increase the batt life, and the celeron does not have speedstep. I searched the forum but could not find a conclusive answer. It seems that its possible, but i want to make sure.

The laptop currently has 512 mb DDR2 ram (256 x 2). Does this ram need to be installed in pairs or can I toss one 256 module and replace it with a 1 gig module? Thanks.

Well, I found the answer to my first question, and it seems that I am able to install a pentium m 533 FSB cpu. If someone can answer my ram question, i will appreciate it. Thanks.

You can have mismatched pairs with no issue. But just remember that dual channel will only work with matched pairs (wouldn't worry about it, performance gain is negligible).

Thank you. I think that is what I'll end up doing, and maybe get another gig of ram later on if needed.

Ok, so while we are on the topic of the Inspiron 6000, I am upgrading another Inspiron and will have some parts to give to my nephew and his i6000, if they will work.

Is it possible to:

1) Use a Core Duo T2500 in this mainboard? (I think I know the answer ...)

2) Use 2 x 512MB DDR2 667 (200 pin PC5300) RAM in this mainboard?

3) Use an ATI X1400 video card? (existing is Intel 945 onboard)

Thanks in advance for any info regarding this great little machine!

1. No, chipset does not support it.
2. Yes, it is backwards compatible but will downclock to PC4200.
3. No. If ordered with the onboard GPU then there is no PCI-E expansion slot for the card nor the right chipset to control it. (BTW i6000 uses 915 chipset not 945).

Thanks for the information sakor1,

I was not able to locate any detailed information about the system on Dell's website. One more thing to make these forums so great.

So I can give the kid a leg up by replacing his single 256MB RAM module with 2 x 512MB modules.

That should help XP out a little!

Thanks again for the info!

Do some shopping around for ram. Newegg.com usually has the best prices.
