8790 and Vista sooooooooo slow??

Thread Starter
just installed a clean installation of Vista Ultimate on my 8790, though just! had to get the Promise Technology Inc. Ultra Driver from Sager Website for it to detect the HD.

anyway, now it's installed, it is sooooooooooooooooo slow?? clicking anything takes at least 15 seconds to open anything, the screen builds itself up is small stages and refreshing the screen can take upto 30 seconds.

i suspect the video card? what else can it be that makes it so slow?

but it runs fine (restricted) if runing in safe mode.

Maybe driver support isn't all it's cut out to be since Vista is so new. Just a guess.

However, the video card is going to be a problem, I think, if you're using Aero and the other graphically intense settings (translucency, etc.). Personally, I wouldn't recommend Vista to anyone on an 8790, but that's just me. If you haven't already, take a peek inside the 8790 Artifacting thread and get an idea of what happens to these machines when the video card gets too hot.

If you're committed to keeping Vista on there, I'd suggest:

1) Regular, thorough cleaning of the innards of your machine (altho' that should be Page 1 of the owner's manual for these things)

2) Turning off some of the more graphically intense (and meaningless) eye candy in Vista.

At the first sign on artifacting, turn the machine off and do diagnostics on why it could possibly be heating up (e.g.- gunked up w/ lint, etc.)

Not sure if I'm any help, but that's about all I can think of.

I had the same issue. The only way I got Vista to run on my 8790 was to install the "old" XP display drivers. With these I lose hibernation capability. A call to Sager won't help as they (Clevo) aren't going to update the display drivers for Vista. It looks like the ATI Catalyst Vista drivers won't work with the 8790 either though I haven't tried Catalyst 7.3 released today mainly because I'm sure it won't work and it's a pain to try to get your computer back to normal when it runs soooo slow under those drivers. The old XP drivers and/or the mobiity 9600 is a little too slow to run Aero (a 1.9 video score; I think a 2.0 wold qualify to run Aero). What's cool about the 8790 is it still competes with the latest laptops for drive speed (with RAID 0) and does pretty well in the Vista CPU scores. Graphics and memory scores (2.1 with my 2 gig machine) drags it down.

Vista on 8790 = bust. What's worse is that the Vista readiness application warned me about none of this. When I have time in my life again I will be moving my 8790 back to XP and purchasing another computer on which to use Vista. I'm sure Vista will be a small shot in the arm for the hardware industry.

re: Vista and drivers, I read that 64-bit Vista requires signed drivers. meaning not able to install community-developed drivers, and it also means any old hardware you have by no-name manufacturers probably won't ever work in 64-bit Vista. (F8 on startup can disable this requirement, but it has to be pressed EVERY time on bootup. Alternatively, Authenticode can be used to sign unsigned drivers).
