Could R6xx Beat N 8xxx into laptops...?

Here's an interesting bit of news...especially the predictions on power consumption. 'Course, it does come from the Inq, so take with grain of salt. It could solve a lot of the heat grief.

Hmmm... This could be interesting. Maybe ati can finally get back into the laptop game so theres actual competition.

Interesting read, and not suprising when you think of it either. Knowing of the delay the R600 had, ATI knew when nvidia dropped the 8800 on them, Nvidia had them beat. AMD throws them back to the drawing board, and using their own resources from processors, do the die shrink, a few tweaks along the line and get a step up on Nvidia. I would have been a real shame if the R600 came out 6 months later inferior to the 8800. now looks like Nvidia might have to play ball, but I wouldnt worry, their own die shrink and an 8900 will put them back in place hehe.

Horrah, now they're down to about the same level as a desktop 8800GTX, power consumption wise.

hehe probably, but seriously with all these delays, I sniff a dud over at ATI and the delays to try to get in line with Nvidia's offering.

but i just reread the topic heading, could ATI beat Nvidia into laptops? hell, i doubt it considering Nvidia is due to drop the rest of the 8x00 seris in May same when the R600 is released mainstream, i doubt it. This die shrink isnt enough. the timeline isnt enough either. Nvidia will most likely get it out first and I know their will be a 8800 offering for a lappy when the Santa rosa platform is released.

We'll know before too long. At the moment, the 8800GTX is far and away the best card out there, no question. The next generations will only build on that success. It hasn't been perfect sailing. Nobody has had anything bad to say about the architecture but there have been plenty of rumblings about drivers and support.

I am optimistic on the ATI front, though. I think it was much better that they delayed the launch of the R600 family to get it right, (hopefully), and avoid another paper launch. I really don't think they can afford another one of those. If they can leapfrog nVidia with their 65 nano process, (and the vista certified drivers), the delay will not have been wasted.

Just a bunch of guesses from me...we'll see soon enough...

If valid this is definitely interesting news. I was hoping ATI had something up their sleeves. I have to agree though that I doubt they will beat Nvidia to the mobile market, they don't even have the desktop ones out yet. But who knows...

Don't you just love the GPU wars? lol, they're always good for us

I haven't come across too much that was all that exciting except the graphics stuff. I was sifting through some sites for, relatively, recent news.

AMD/ATI are going to keep us waiting for a while yet. It seems they're playing things pretty tight. The 65nano news was unexpected.

I speculate that neither nVidia or ATI will be offering their top dog chips in laptops much before the end of the year. The second tier offerings, though, should be more than capable enough to keep folks happily upgrading.
