8790 with ATI Radeon 9700 question

hi--can't find many post relating to my question, here goes...

i have a Sager 8790 with a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card. other specs as below (see signature).

ok, installed a clean, fresh installation of Vista. system is running sooooooooo slow? anything i do takes minimum 10 seconds to do, all windows takes ages to open, mouse freezes for a few seconds--can't move it. is this to do with the graphics card? it has 256MB on-board memory. refresh rate is permantely at 61hz (shared video memory is 0, is that right?) is it the graphics card that's making the laptop sooooooo slow?

thanks G-Omaha, i will try those drivers later and let you know (and for the information of others) the outcome.

i have installed a clean/fresh installation of Windows Vista--what i have found is the default ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (WDDM) drivers installed by Vista make the system unusable, the delay/lag is extreamly slow. moving the mouse pointer takes minimum 5 seconds, opening a window for example takes between 5-10 seconds. but if i uninstall the Mobility Radeon 9700 drivers, Vista then uses a raw/basic driver for the display and then the system works great but with limited resolution, colors etc i.e. basic default hardware settings. the latest ATI Catalyst Drivers, i think version 7.2 from ATI (www.ati.com) do not work. i have looked for Omega drivers but according to OmegaDrivers (www.omegadrivers.net), they're still working on a 32bit Vista driver package for ATI and NVidia. i sooo hope the drivers you've pointed me to will work. i will let you know.

i tried the drivers from (http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driv...ormation/3416/]) but the error message i get is that i need to set the device to use a Standard VGA Driver to continue--the ATI setup/installation then quits. how do i do this--how do i set the graphics card to a Standard VGA Driver?

when i uninstall or disable this device, my laptop runs great but with limited resolution, refresh rate and colors. if only it would work dam!!!

someone with the same 8790 as me must have installed Vista and experienced the same slow/lag i am experiencing surely? the 8790 is getting older, the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 is too--before long, there's not going to be drivers for it--for Vista??

Sorry dude, I'd help you out, but I don't plan on installing Vista on my 8790, mainly for fear of having similar problems with drivers (especially video drivers). You have to find drivers made for Vista in order for the card to work 100% properly.

I did a quick search and found this website which claims to have Vista-compatible drivers for a lot of cards, including our mobility 9700 series. Just ctrl + F it, it's on the first page towards the bottom.

Good luck!
