Should the A45-s120 work on AC power with a dead battery?

I have a Toshiba A45-S120 running Win XP Home. For about 3 months I would receive erratic readings from the battery power indicator. When it was plugged in it would be fine and quickly rise to 100% but when not plugged in the meter would drop fast and occasionally fluctuate up and down. One second it would read 80% 2 hours remaining, then it would say 20% and then it would give a strange reading like 60% 4 hours remaining.
This went on for about 3 months. Now the laptop won't boot. No lights flash. I'm sure the battery is dead but shouldn't I be able to boot the laptop using AC power?

I would think you should be able to boot without the battery present. At least I've been able to pull the batteries from all 3 of the tecra's I've owned and boot them no problem.

That fluctuation in the battery life readings seems VERY strange.

Hello,

The short answer, Yes. However, it is probable that your power supply is just no longer working or at least it is no longer pushing out enough voltage to run your pc.

Lastly, if the battery is completly shorted out (for some reason) rather than just dead you would not be able to boot the pc until you removed the battery and then pluged in the laptop to the power supply. If it still fails to boot I would get a new power supply since it is possible that it either shorted out the power supply.

I am looking for a battery for a M-45 S331 myself.
