I think I want a MBP

Thread Starter
I am really thinking hard about getting the 2.33GHZ MBP. Even though I spend all this $$$ money on a desktop computers, I find my self gamming less and less. Core 2 Duo will be plenty fast for 2 years or so for normal desktop use. ATM the only game I play is World of Warcraft, and HL2 which the MBP will handle both very well. I also find I spend more time on my Xbox 360 and my DS Lite over my windows desktop. I guess I want to hear about other recent switchers. Your thoughts etc...

Not a thought from a switcher... but a thought as to why switch?

Are you going to take advantage of Apple's XYZ, are you buying into brand image, are you buying into the looks? All are valid reasons, don't get me wrong. But consider that the money you'll spend, which will undoubtably be over $2k will get you more innards for the same price.

I have considered switching, just to see how well OSX works on fast mac... not an aging library one. They are just too expensive for me, thats all. I'm also not into white colored electronics, not my thing.

Yes, those are indeed good questions. Anyway, I never look at macs, but at least for the 13"s, there is the black version.

Other than that, remember to ask for advice under the Mac section, I'm sure people there will help you decide if you really need one. Of course, the scale will always point to Macs there, but almost all people here are unbiased, but they will just defend their point of view, which is something slightly different (and that is true specially among old members).

Make up your mind using posts there and here, and I'm sure you will end buying what you really need.

If you end up going with a Mac you might want to wait a few month. OS X 10.5 will be out soon. Apple charges about $100 for an OS upgrade.

you already have an xbox for gaming so i guess you dont really need a gaming computer. but you still say you'd be playing some games which requires windows...aka you'll buy a mac only to run windows on it? WHY! if you get a mac , run mac os.... if you are gonna run windows, you're better off getting one of those sexy metalic asus models. will be cheaper, look better, be higher quality....and essentially fill all your voids if you're not running osx. if you do plan on running mac os...then go nuts.

None of the black Apple products have matching black accessories. That means the black Macbook will have a white power cable... (wtf?!?). Similarly, no black earphones or charging cradles/usb cables for the ipods.

Ipods are acceptable, since there are so many third party accessories that come in black (like cradles), but the Macbook ones just aren't IMO. A huge oversight on Apples part, but then again, I don't know what Apple is thinking half the time. In some cases I applaud Apple's clean looks and design, but sometimes they really need to get their products more thoroughly thought out.

I use iTunes exclusively for music, but I run XP & Vista. I simply find it superior to all the other music playing programs. Assuming other aspects of Apple software could be so intuitive and easy to use, OSX could be very valid reason to buy a Mac. The only complaint I have about iTunes is it's poor performance, (slow load times), relative to WMP and Winamp.

I'm in the saaaaame boat.. dont really play many games anymore and don't really put my m1710 to use anymore.. play world of warcraft from time to time.. less and less..

get on a friend's macbook and start playing around with it, check your email, surf the net for awhile. if you like the feel of it, then you'll like your decision. some people just can't get used to the mac interface, despite how much they may appreciate its elegance and operability from a design perspective. you may be the type of person who is just more used to the way windows tasks things. really, you don't need a macbook if you don't need os x. running xp on it is not the most efficient solution.

Yeah, I'm no mac expert... but that detail about white cable is really stupid... I mean, it's not like white is the common, every notebook AC is black, so in theory, it should be even easier to provide a black cable.

arent the MBP's getting updated soon? would it be bad to purchase one right now?

Well the new INTEL platform isnt too far from being out and apple is usually right behind industry evolving technology so id say maybe 4-5 months before the MBP get updated again probaly to coincide with the TIGER launch. Dell usually the first when it comes to INTEL products. If your going ot make the switch you can wiat a few months for the absolute latest but buying now wouldnt hurt you since were honestly talking about minor changes here and if your thinking about WoW performance heck even the Macbooks budget GMA950 (horrible GPU) can handle it with max res on a macbook.
