Help Upgrading presario c500 series notebook

Thread Starter
I have purchased a presario c500 series notebook and have already upgraded to 2GB of Ram and I want to know what processors this thing will support other than the celeron m. i want to go dual core but am unsure of what it will handel due to poor support from HP. Can anyone here hel me out. i have been browsing for help and cannot find anyhting. HP said it has the 945GM Express chipset so i am sure it will support dual core. Any help is appreciated. i can install it just have to know what socket (probably socket M) and what processors are supported.

I don't service notebooks, but assume the processor is surface mounted (read: soldered) to the board.

Changing the processor isn't gonna happen. Sell the notebook undisturbed and buy a faster one. Or, if you are running Vista, throw that turkey out and install XP Pro. I am doing this right now on a C501NR, and it is MUCH faster and more responsive than Vista.

I already threw out vista. The processor should not be surface mounted, I believe it is socket M, I had a dv6000 with the AMd 3200+ in it and it wasnt surface mounted either. I havent opened this one up so not sure waht to do. Can't really sell it for waht I paid for it so i will take a big loss on this thing, I guess I will just deal with what I got until i Get a better answer to my question. thanks for the input.

You need to stop spreading wrong information. Most processors are not soldered to the motherboard (except for LV and ULV ones), so 95% of processors are quite easily taken out of their socket. So you can upgrade to a different processor, mainly the core duos with a bios upgrade. Don't listen to gavin.

yeah, i believe it is socket 479m, waht is the difference from a socket 479 processor and where can I purchase a core 2 duo T5500, that is the highest the bios supports right now. Bios v.14 Presario c503WM

It's the same thing. And the t5500 is not the highest, you can go with any core 2 duo in there.

Try www.newegg.com and get any c2d cpu u can afford.

Also, check the manufacturer site for any newer BIOS

What part of "I do not service notebooks" and "assume the processor is surface mounted" did you not understand? The very few laptops that I have opened have the processors surface mounted. If current laptops have socket mounted processors, fine. It is up to the user to find this out, or open the laptop himself (and risk breaking it), to find out for sure.

Well, if you "do not service notebooks" then just simply say "I'm not experienced with notebooks, so I cannot tell u whether or not the cpus are easily upgradeable", instead of saying with authority that:

Changing the processor isn't gonna happen.
And all laptops, except for 0.1% (ultra portables) have socket mounted cpus, so there's little guessing when it comes to that subject.

I appreciate the help guys. I do want one more thing. Where can i find a list of what CPU's are supported.

Any core duo or core 2 duo will work (either yonah or merom core)

Hey there folks. A lot of great info in this thread. Just so happen that I have the same laptop. Mine has the Celeron M 440 in it.

I've been considering getting this: intel Core Duo Processor T2250 1.73GHz 2MB CPU, OEM.
  • Specification
    • Mfr Part Number: LF80539GE0302M
    • Process Type: Intel Core Duo processor T2250
    • Frequency: 1.73 GHz
    • FSB: 533 MHz
    • Cache: 2 MB
    • Process: 65 nm
    • Socket: Socket 478
    • Package: OEM
    • This processor is a Dual-Core processor.
    • This processor supports Execute Disable Bit capability.
    • This processor supports Enhanced SpeedStep Technology.
So would I see any significant change if I swap it out to a t2250? When changing the processer, would I have to reformat/reboot the laptop or is it just a straight install like RAM?

I'm trying to do the same thing actually. When I opened up mine C502US, I found there to be two really stubborn screws that are preventing me from taking the case apart (thus getting full access to the cpu). Also it seems that the the corners of the chip have been "hot glue gunned" to the motherboard. Has anyone successfully upgraded yet and/or encountered these issues?

Also, I did most of my research on wikipedia for this. Most of you may have already found this, but any socket-m compatible core 2 duos are listed here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...s#Core_2_Duo_2

Just CTRL+F for "socket m"

For anyone still working on this, I e-mailed HP for disassembly instructions for the C500 series. They replied back saying a service guide isn't readily available for the C500 series, but the C300 manual can be used instead. Here's a quick link to the pdf http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00753552.pdf

so any update on this, is replacing the cpu a possibility for the c500 series laptops
post #15 of 294
I still think it's possible, but I don't know if it's worth the work anymore. Not only do you have the issue of the cpu being hot glued into place, but some of these screws have been loctite'd in or something. I've broken 2 precision screwdrivers trying to take out the screws that hold the wireless card. In all honesty though, you may very well be more handy than I am, so don't let me discourage you. If anybody can report any success here, I may reconsider selling this thing.

You can check this thread for great pictures of a disassembled C500 series notebook:

I think this laptop can support atleast coreduo, compaq sells the c500 series in certain european countires with coreduo , look at this link

Yup, in addition to the Core Duo, various pages on the U.S. Compaq/HP website indicates the Intel Core2Duo and Intel Dual Core Pentium chips are supported by the C500 series as well.

If you customize a C500T on the Compaq website, the following is a CPU option:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) dual core T2080(1.73GHz/1MB)

And the notes for the C500 series F.14 BIOS indicates:
"Adds support for Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile Processor T5500"
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...380236&lang=en

The current BIOS version for the C500 is F.24
The following notebook series all share the same BIOS:
Compaq Presario C300 Notebook PC
Compaq Presario C500 Notebook PC
HP G3000 Notebook PC
HP G5000 Notebook PC

just did hp support chat and was able to get from the person that it does support core duo t2250 processor, the hp part number is 441702-001
post #20 of 294
So after seeing those pictures, it's obvious I was wrong about a lot of things here. Most importantly, I assumed the chip right next to the ram was the cpu. I bought a better screwdriver (those cheap precision kits just wouldn't do) and was able to get all the way down to the processor. I switched the Celeron M with a Core Duo T2250 I picked up on ebay, booted up, but there was no display. I put the Celeron back in, but it wouldn't stop blue screening me at the vista logo until I installed vista again. So now I'm back where I started with a T2250 that may or may not work depending on what I'm doing wrong. Anyone out there know anything that might help?
