That's gonna really, really pushing it. If you have one on hand, why not giving it a try? winknudge.gif

macarule,

If you try it and it works be sure to let us know.

You could be resetting the bar for the C500 and I would certainly be interested in any further upgrades.

 Thanks,

 John

would be awesome if it actually worked!

Hey guys,

Sorry for the lateness of the reply here, been busy with school and work. Silly IT career!

Anyway, the answer is definitely a NO on the T8300.

Core 2 Duo T8300 is a Penryn-core Socket P based chip. The C500 is EXCLUSIVELY Socket M based.

The absolute best chip you should be able to run in a C500 would be a T7600, which is a Merom-core 2.33 GHz Socket M chip if I remember the specs right. And THAT you would only get to run in boards 445605-001 (2 GB max RAM) and 441695-001 (4 GB max RAM INSTALLED, 3 GB usable).

Absolutely NO T6xxx, T8xxx, or T9xxx series C2D chip will be usable in one of these systems, the sockets are physically incompatible. Also, the C500s maxed at 667 MHz bus, while the slowest Penryn-based chips have a bus speed of 800 MHz. It's a wash all around.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but no sense someone mis-spending money or ruining a good chip, laptop, or both. That being said, if you HAVE a Socket P based laptop needing an upgrade, a T8300 isn't a bad way to go. I opted for the T9300 myself, but there isn't a TON of difference between them in the end.

Regards,
O Shadow Fox O

Quick edit: There are definitely not any overlaps, as there were with a small number of Merom based chips. By the time Penryn-core chips went into production, Socket M was long dead in computer terms.

Hi OShadowFoxO, hi everybody,

I just installed a C2D T7200 bought 30 € shipped on eBay in my Compaq C500. Prices for T7400 and T7600 are just indecent.
I had never thought that dismantling a notebook would be that hard laugh4.gif

Previously I had a Pentium Dual-Core T2060 so the raw performance increase should be around 40-50 %.
My WEI ratings went from 4.0 (CPU) and 4.6 (memory) to 5.1 and 5.1.
I also bought a 128 GB SSD (Samsung 830) that I plan to install later with Win7 Pro x64.

Hi qapmoc,

That's excellent news. And yeah, the T7200 is a happy medium. 2 GHz is still a decent enough speed for a lot of uses, and while the Core 2 Duo chips are now showing their age, they've still got strength enough in their teeth for some good bites.

Admittedly, my desire to tinker has me curious about a T7400 or T7600, but I can't justify the expense for so little gain. (333 MHz just isn't a big enough jump to be worried about in these systems)

I would LOVE to know what your experience with an SSD in the system is like. As much as I love my C500, it's the ONLY system I own that is still SSD-less. I need to handle an issue with the Intel SSD I have and if I do it would cause some shuffling. An SSD would eventually go in it.

Please go ahead and post your results and any notes you have on the performance if you go ahead with it, I can't be the only one who would be interested in the performance!

Regards,
O Shadow Fox O

Edit: Oh, and from the T2060 to the Y7200? I just double-checked... Yes, a BIG jump in some ways. Adding in VT-x, 64-bit, Supplemental SSE3, quadrupling the L2 cache, faster bus, and 400 MHz more... You should be pleasantly surprised overall.

No prob, I will come back to give some feedback.
The system is already pretty fast with a 7200rpm hard drive so I guess it will become a real rocket once I'll have stuck a SSD inside ;)

The performance gap is noticeable when surfing on bloat-websites or compiling stuff. Bootup also seems to be a bit faster.
There is a theoretical power gain of 25% with the clock speed increase, around 15% thanks to the architectural switch from Yonah (P6) to Merom (Core), and a few more percents with the additional L2 cache. Both architectural and cache improvements depend on the task running (rate of instructions using floating points ALUs, amount of data that can be cached, etc.)

Just when I thought I had my c500 as good as it could be, now your talking about SSD's.

I never even considered that option when doing my upgrade, although now it seems logical.

qapmoc, I eagerly await your feedback of this further upgrade, and whether you think it is worth while. Although you have got me looking at SSD's on line.

Anything to keep my C500 as long as I can and get it as fast as possible.

I eventually relented and installed Itunes on my C500 so I could sync my wifes Ipod with her Iphone, I have fought this since I carried out my upgrade as when I had it on the c500 before I upgarded it really slowed the laptop down so much that I eventually uninstalled it. With a noticable improvement in speed immediatley  it was uninstalled.

Post upgrade and the C500 runs as good with itunes on it as it did without. So happy wife, sync'd ipod and iphone, and I tunes can stay now. smile.gif

Is it just me or is itunes the most user unfriendly thing around? I had to break into the software on both her ipod and iphone to get all the music I wanted, then create a folder containing all her music and add sub folders in to the itunes software to get it to do what I wanted. She did not help by having two different playlists on each device. Then when I thought I had got what I wanted after many hours it synced songs to her iphone that were on my laptop but not on itunes. After sync they were on itunesmad.gif

Anyway rant over and I am way off topic.

Just wish I could get internet explorer to use my yahoo email account as its default, but everything I try does not seem to work I suppose thats just life with windows 7.

 Keep up the great work.

 John

Hi guys,

Yeah, the SSD should provide a boost in any case. I put a 128 GB Crucial in my DV9700t and of course the WEI shot up to 7.8 from 5.3 for the primary hard drive, but the real deal is in actual performance boosts of course and it came through in spades.

Between the 8 GB of RAM and the SSD, the system is more than fast enough for all my needs (except more modern games, but that's what I have my desktop for).

That's the ONLY thing I wish I could get for my C500: A better video card. Even at only 4 GB of RAM (well, 3.25), it's still a plenty useful, peppy little beast.

I honestly forget and just don't feel like digging back through the posts, c500 fan, what your original CPU was: If it was a Celeron like most of us or if it was another chip... But with the upgrades, I'm not surprised that you're now able to chew up even iTunes and spit it out.

Sometimes, I think the computer industry shoots itself in the foot by making these chips and systems last the way they do when they do... Why should we spend money on something new when something old (with some care and tweaks) can fit the need just as well? Heheh

Looking forward to hearing about the SSD!
