Cooling issues on 5205-s703

Hey folks,

I have a Stallite 5205-s703, 2.4GHz, 1GB ram, 80GB HDD and it is realitivly clean.

When I turn it on, I can run a 1 hour video with either MediaPlayer or InterVideo DVD before a problem occures. Toward the end of that hour the video slows way down while the audio continues on normal pace. I pause the program and wait for anywhere from a minute to five minute, then video and audio sync back up. The slow downs start coming more and more frequently after that.

I have a cooling base underneath and that seems to have some effect, (before the base the slowdowns came much quicker).

I am assuming the problem is overheating. My questions are:

1. Could the processer have been damaged due to heat? (duh, of course, but to what extent)
2. When searching for repalcement parts, I can't seem to find anything for a 5205 except a power supply or cable. Is there a good reliable site that had 'puter guts?
3. Where can I find the system board monitor programs I saw others writing about?

Thank folks, you're the greatest.

I just seen a post on either this site or the other side of this forum of a guy who is thinking of parting out a 5205

Well wadda ya know. I took her apart and blew out out the dust. Gave her a good wipedown and reassembled her and she is running as cool as when I first bought her.

I would still like to know about the possible damage a processer can sustain from long exposure to over heating. How could I quantify the degredation? And still would like a good website for replacement parts.

A 5205's P4-M processor is good up to like 100ºC. Highest temp I've ever seen with my 5205 has been like 86ºC and the motherboard has never suffered any type of permanent damage.

That said, I use SpeedFan to keep an eye on my 5205's operating temps: http://almico.com/speedfan.php

Needless to say, the 5205's cooling system is a bit funky--especially the passively-cooled heatpipe for the GPU that runs under the left optical drive bay. In nearly 4 years of ownership the worst I've had happen is that I've lost three optical drives so far to excessive operational temps--solely related to the GPU's heat--but the laptop itself still works perfectly fine.

Check the condition of the thermal grease under the 5205's three heatsinks (CPU, GPU, and northbridge chip). I've replaced the factory pink crap--that turned a nasty shade of burnt grey over time--with ArcticSilver 5.

Thanks for the tips. I haven't had to replace the Optical Drive but I have noticed, when I remove a disk, it is extremely warm. I do think the heat played a part in the demise of my original HDD.

Thanks for the program link. Also, thanks for thermal suggestion.
