Toshiba Satellite M70 Graphics card replacement

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the ATI Radeon X700 (256 mb) graphics card in this laptop. It is no longer displaying 3D graphics properly. World of Warcraft and all other such games are full of lines and distortion. It may be fixable, but if not, is it at least possible to replace the graphics card? I'd hate to have to chuck the whole computer!

Thanks for that link. I still a little unsure as to whether the graphics card can be replaced if it is defective. I'm not interested in upgrade, I just want to get the laptop working again. How expensive is it if the whole motherboard has to be replaced, if the graphics card is not replaceable?

You can't. It is soldered to the motherboard

Check on EBay, that would probably be your cheapest option for a MB replacement. Is it possible that the GPU (video chip) cannot handle WoW at the games current setting? Does this happen during normal activity or just gaming????

Thanks for you replies. It only happens when I play 3d games like WOW and F.e.a.r.. When I work in my animation packages, it is generally fine, except when I go to manipulate something, I get an annoying thick line by my cursor. I guess I could play the games at a lower resolution so I don't damage things once I get whatever is wrong fixed. The graphics card is suppose to be good...maybe it just overheats... Paula

It might be a good card but only for lower settings. Some of the newer games require a pretty decent GPU in order to play at highest settings and resolutions

Hmmmm. Good point. If I get it fixed I will try a lower setting in hopes that I won't ruin it again. I have it with a tech right now. I will post the results when I know. Thanks again for all your feed back.

Did you try updating the video card driver?

Yes, I did give that a try. No luck, but thanks for the suggestion.

Get in touch with a Toshiba Service Center they'll replace the motherboard if it's still under warranty. If it's not i believe it cost around 500$

Thanks for the info Pete. It is not under warranty, but $500 is a lot cheaper than replacing a $1700 laptop!

I'm also suspecting overheating. Does it feel particularly hot anywhere when the lines appear? Have you tried cleaning out the vents?
