10.4.9 issue with ext hd's?

the only thing ive changed is the update to .9

i have two macally fw400 cases, that when ejected from desktop, they use to power down. Since the update, they just stay on, ejected or not. ive even tried ejecting from disk utility.

ive tried a reinstall of my image, pre .9, and it seemed to work.

what on gods green earth can do this in .9?

5.25 macally fw400/usb20 500bc
3.5 macally fw400/usb20 100ac

I don't think it's an issue of the OS thats a built-in hardware capability with your external drive It might be an issue of one of the drives failing and/or the enclosure failing. if you have them piggybacked then it could keep both from spinning down.

I currently have a 250GB WD running off of USB2.0 on my mac and it spins down when its not in use every time.

sorry I cant be of more help

its not a hardware issue. this all is taking place directly after the .9 update.

both drives work wonderfully. i find it very odd that you think two seperate enclosures have failed at exactly the same time?!?!?! (not meaning you are odd, but your conclusion)

just seems a little too coincedental, ya know?

its 100% its software. if i apply .8, it goes away.

anyone else?

I never meant to say that both were failing but one failing may contribute to another failing if you are running them in piggyback mode (I assumed you were running piggy back mode because of the use of Firewire and the need for two enclosures)

Anyway I'd call apple's tech support and see what they say it may be as simple as a clearing of the SMC http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319

Oh and I didn't mean to sound snappy about it, I think I was half asleep when I wrote that

no worries.

ive tried each on their own. Im still a little confused why you think i need to clear the SMC, or that its still a hardware problem.

ive reverted to a disk image qwith nothing different other than it has .8 on it. they work 100%.

im not really sure what to do with this. they do the same thing hooked up in single drive mode. its def. a .9 issue
