Asus G1 (to Buy or not to Buy)

After much help from some great individuals, both here and one other forum, I have narrowed my options to one laptop; Asus G1

What I’m looking for; good battery life, graphics (gaming and video), appearance, weight. Basically I’m looking for is a portable system that will not be outdated as far as gaming and apps for the next couple years. I also want to be able to run Vista.

I do have several questions.
1. Is there anything else out there within 500.00 of 2,000.00 that can beat this system?

2. As far as the screen, is ColorShine same as Glossy? What is TFT, and does Asus G1 have it?

3. Is there a big deference between WideUXGA and WSXGA+, should this matter to me?

4. Should I be upgrading any of the config below?

5. What can I expect to pay for the config below?

6. I live in the US, best place to buy the Asus G1, online or B&M?

Asus G1
•Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz)
•Screen: 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) ColorShine
•Memory: 2GB DDR2 667
•Hard Disk: 160GB HD 5400 RPM (will get 100GB 7200 RPM)
•Graphics: NVIDIA GeForceGo 7700 GPU 512 MB
•Optical Drive: Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S DVD RW DL
•Wireless: Intel PROSet/Wireless A/B/G + Bluetooth
•Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Edition
•1.3 Mega Pixel camera with microphone
•Included Accessories: ASUS Optical Mouse (Logitech MX518) and backpack

I really appreciate all the advice, a BIG thank you!!!

The only thing I'd be worried about is the battery life of G1. Given the specs, its probly a battery chugger (the nvidia 7700, the 2Ghz CPU, and the high RPM HDD you're thinking of getting). Otherwise, it is a fantastic laptop; heck, had I not bought an Acer Ferrari, I would've gone for the G1, you bet!
Now, to answer your questions...
1. I'm not sure; have been out of the laptop market for a little while now.
2. TFT is a technology used by nearly all LCD monitors today. You don't have to worry about that. To read up more on ColorShine TFT screen offered by Asus, go to this website http://www.screentekinc.com/asus-col...-screens.shtml

3. The differences between the 2 types of monitors you mentioned is chiefly in the resolutions offered: WUXGA goes up to 1920x1200, while the WSXGA goes up to 1440x900. Personally I like the WUXGA better. You never know what you may end up doing with the laptop in the future, and you can always tone-down the resolution.

4. The config you have right now is KILLER. I don't really see anything that you'd need to upgrade, except, if you really want to, go to Vista, but that depends on your perference.

5. ...look it up on Google? If you can't find it, let us know.

6. I bought my Ferrari online. Much cheaper.

1. I think that the Asus V1J looks better. It also has some more useful features (spill-proof keyboard, fingerprint reader, modular bay). It's the same price as the G1, although it comes with 1 GB RAM instead of 2 GB, a hard drive that's got 40 GB less capacity, and a video card that's marginally slower (maybe 1-5 FPS on average). So all things considered, it's a bit more expensive than the G1 after adding the extra GB of RAM, but I think it offers more.

2. I read the link on Colorshine and couldn't help thinking that if an Asus PR rep didn't write it, then Asus should promptly hire the person who did!

basically, Color Shine = glossy, Crystal Shine = brighter

TFT means the screen is "active", but all notebook screens are like that, so it doesn't matter

However, there IS a special aspect of the G1's screen (and the V1's screen as well, since they use the same screen): it's got a lower refresh rate. Most notebook screens have a 25 millisecond refresh rate, whereas the G1 has a 16 ms refresh. What that means is that screen response time is faster on the G1 than on most notebooks.

3. The higher the resolution, the more stuff you can get on the screen at once, but also the smaller text will appear and the harder it will be to read stuff. If you've got good eyesight and you want to cram every last bit of space out of your screen, you might want one with UXGA (1900 x 1200 pixels). However, I personally think that it's just too high of a resolution for a 15" screen. If you need that kind of detail, I'd recommend you get a 17" notebook instead or use an external monitor (most dedicated graphics cards should run an external 1900 x 1200 monitor). WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) is still high resolution, but not so high that it becomes overly difficult to read things, for me at least. I think it's a good resolution for a 15" screen.

4. no need to upgrade anything in my opinion

5. about $1800-1900 US

6. you can get a G1 at Best Buy, but the best places to buy them from are authorized Asus resellers. Here's a list of ones you can find online as well as where they're physically located. You might have one in your area. http://www.notebookforums.com/thread94364.html

Great addendum Djembe. Thanks =D
And yeah, I considered the V1J heavily before I bought my Ferrari. Too bad I don't have the cash to own both... =( lol

I would buy the dell e1705..its around $1000 base price, and you can get 2GB ram, 2.33GHz core 2 duo, and the nvidia geforce go 7900GS for like $2000 or $2200 (you can sacrifice the processor to a 2GHz and it'll be less)

I'm really tempted to get a G1 myself. I don't think there's anything that really competes with it. It's portable, it's got power. plus try outfitting something similar like the 5500 at alienware. It'll get well over 2 grand with the 2 gig of ram, and still not a 7700 in the video slot.

The only thing that holds me back is Santa Rosa. I hope to get 3 - 4 years out of a laptop. I know there is always something better coming up, but the possibility of getting 802.11n, faster FSB, and a dx10 video card within 6 months just seems too tempting to me.

Of course, i've already got a laptop. It runs all the games i currently play (wow, ut2k4, source engine stuff). It doesn't run them well, but i'm a patient man.

I'm in the market for a 15.4 in laptop myself and the G1 is the top contender because of the go7700 ( nvidia is a must for linux). But....

- The unit is too big. The screen almost looks like a 4:3 screen because of all of the plastic bezel top and bottom.
- No express card? Granted I like my Audigy 2 card, but the expresscard X-Fi's are due soon and this laptop cannot even use Asus' external graphics card product because of the lack of express card.
- size, again this one looks 2" thick.

PLEASE, Won't some PC vendor just make me a laptop that looks just like a Macbook Pro, but in matte black, with a go7700, a 1680x1050 panel, two extra USB ports and a memory card reader.

I pulled the trigger on a Asus G1 with the 100GB 7200 upgrade!

I ordered through milestonepc after speaking with a great guy named Danny.

It was a tossup between milestonepc and btotech; BUT what tipped the scales was that milestonepc offers a “price match” and faster delivery time. I ended up saving over 100.00 and I will be getting my system within a few days, as opposed to 2 weeks with btotech.

Both companies handled my questions in a friendly and professional manor.

Thank you to everyone that helped me save money and discover this GREAT gem of a system!

If you dont want this computer for business, and you're concerned about portability, I'd save $800 and gets the asus a8jp, or save 550 and get the asus a8js. They both have basically the same graphics capability and are 14"

He already ordered it, so I don't think theres any turning back. Unless theres like some 30 day turn it back in little offer or something along those lines.
