Uninstall Vista, install Windows XP

Thread Starter
Hi. I bought a new Toshiba A135-S4427 & S2276. They came with Vista installed. It has to go! How do I go about inunstalling Vista and installing XP? I tried it with XP Home, SP1, but vista wouldn't let me do it. I was following the directions I found on "About.com".
Could someone please walk me throughthe steps (the Reader's Digest version) I've always just upgraded, I've never uninstalled an OS before. (I'm the one who was having trouble connecting it to the internet the first day...) Will a student version of XP Pro work?
Thanks in advance!!

Did you try booting from the Windows XP CD?

I think you will need to format your hard drive before you can install XP over Vista.

Yes, I tried booting from the XP CD and Vista said no. It wasn't even an option. I guess I will just have to format the hard drive and do a clean install with XP.
Thanks!

Exactly. There is no simple way to "downgrade" an operating system, at least not an MS one, without formatting. Just pop XP cd in there and sht the computer down. Then follow the instructions on screen and make sure to do a complete format of the C:\ drive to eliminate vista completely.

You may run into some problems later with certain devices not working because the drivers are not there. This seems to be a recurring problem right now as Toshiba doesn't seem to be providing XP drivers for these devices (only vista ones). There's a thread that I just read somewhere in here discussing just this also in a A135 (IIRC). Take a look there for more info.

I was thinking of buying the A135-2276 which was on sale at bestbuy and circuit city but I haven't had much luck fiding all the drivers I would need to put XP on it.

I found these threads here
here

and

here

they have most of the drivers but still the motherboard, power management, and function buttons are missing.

Hope this helps.

You also need to change your BIOS to boot from the CD drive.

If you don't boot from the CD drive, it won't work.
