USB 2.0 Problems. Please help! ='(

Alrite, here's my situation:

I have a Toshiba Satellite A75-S213
It was purchased two years ago, USB 2.0 is DEFINITELY on it.
I have contacted Toshiba as well as researched numerous specs and all confirm the existence of USB 2.0

Motherboard is Toshiba EDW10
Running on Windows XP, with Service Pack 2 installed when I purchased it.

Now, up until yesterday, I just assumed that my USB 2.0 was functional, and that whenever I was transferring files to my USB 2.0 Flash memory sticks, it was going at HIGH SPEED (2.0).

Now yesterday , i purchased an external hardrive that IS USB 2.0 Compatible (it says this in big letters, with max speed of 480 mbps transfer rate)

However, when i plug it via usb , i recieve a notification, saying that a
"Hi-Speed USB Device is attached to a Non-High speed hub" and that the device is functioning at a reduced speed. To solve this problem, it says to plug it into one of the available ports on a hub that enables High speed. There is a box that shows me a list of available hubs on my computer which apparenlty allow for High speed. The info in the box looks like this:

Standard Enhanced Pci to USB Host controller-->USB Root Hubs (6 ports)-->Unused Port, Unused Port, etc (6 of them)

Now, I only have 3 usb ports on my laptop. I have gone into device manager and it does indeed say "standared ENHANCED pci to usb host controller". I have tried to find any missing drivers, but the fact that it does say "enhanced" shows that i Do have the right drivers. Through research, I believe that the "standard" signifies the company "nVIdia" as the make of my usb controllers, since there is no other company name like NEC or Intel.

But my USB mass storage (ext. harderive)is transferring at really really slow speeds, obviously 1.1 speeds, not 2.0.

However, when trasnfering the same files to my USB Flash memory stick, the rate is FASTER than when i transfer these same files to my ext. hard drive.

If anyone can offer any help, thanks!!!!!!

If you are plugging the flash drive into the same A75 and it is running as USB 2.0, I would look for a different USB cable to try brtween the HD and the machine.

I did try that already, but thanks for the reply and suggestion!
I bought another ext HD, and it worked fine, so I really don't know what went wrong.
