Got my 8790, but I probably have to return it

Thread Starter
I finally got the 8790. It's a great machine first of all. Beautiful screen, VERY fast, but VERY loud. I plan on using it for school(taking notes, etc.), but the noise is just unbearable. I'll explain in detail:

The notebook is normally very quiet with one fan on, this fan is not noticible at all. But every 2-3 minutes, the 2nd fan kicks in and here is the problem. The fan's so loud that it's impossible not to distract anyone else. It's so loud that it's actually louder than my old amd 1800+ system. This full blast of the fan only lasts for around 1 minute or 2, but I'll get kicked out of lectures for sure if this is how loud it'll be. And worse yet, when the fan first kicks in, it's as if all the fans in the notebook kicked in at once.

Many people have also asked about the left palmrest. Well it's warm, but warm enough that my palm/wrist is sweating as I'm typing all of this.

I checked the bios and there's no temperature adjust or anything of that nature that would lower the frequency of the fan kicking in.

It's truly a shame since this machine's just so damn well made. But I guess I can't have the best of both worlds. I'm probably gonna go with a centrino system. The 17" Screen is just beautiful, I really don't want to part with this notebook but I really have no choice.

You really didnt do your research before you bought your laptop now did you?

There is AMPLE information about the noise and heat. I personally dont find it warm at all and in any case I place a handtowel over the palmrest before I put my hands on it...

Next time make sure you research before you jump into something.

Yes, I feel ya.

At first, I was psyched about getting a Sager, insane price: performance. But, also like you, I'm going to be in College taking notes and stuff, and after reading about all the noise and heat, I think this would be one of the laptops if used as a desktop with a cooler, but too distracting for use a true mobile system.

Go Hypersonic! If you need a system RIGHT now, get a CX6: Radeon 9700 pro, Centrino based, all the good stuff. If you don't, I say wait for the socket switch, PCI-express and all the next gen good stuff. That's what I'm gonna do, I'll save my money until the end of the year, when the REAL fun begins.

P4 based machines are not meant to be used in classrooms or libraries...why not get a P-M/Centrino based system?

Even better for your next time notebook take a live demonstration/review of the machine of your choice first...

It's one thing to listen about what some people tell you about a computer and often a completely different thing how your own impressions are. - Add to this additionally some huge degree of individual personal feelings...and you know why it's always a bad thing to buy never in reality before seen notebooks and computers...

I believe, that if people would first preview somewhere the notebooks they maybe consider to select and buy, a lot of unnecessary packaging, ordering and sending back etc. issues wouldn't be needed or stressed world wide. - However, on the other sides there are business domains which just live from these ordering and sending back behaviours of the consumers...

Hrmmm - my 5680 does do a 3-5 second high fan to start but then idles back to normal fan when it kicks on - could it be the 8790 is "stuck" on the high fan for much longer?

is the 8790 really any louder than the 4780? I have been using mine in class for weeks and asked all my profs and classmates if it bothered them... and no one had a problem... I even offered to leave it off for lecture... but was told no to leave it on and take my notes that way if I prefer... I asked them becouse sound is relative to the person, and hey im hard of hearing in both ears, but the sound doesn't even bother my hun, course he is used to my desktop which is relatively louder and the fans run constantly on my desktop... btw I am in the desert and the cooling in my classrooms aren't very good...

you guys of course have to deside for youself... if the sound really doesn't bother you and you love it, why not take it to your profs and various other profs and see what they say about the sound....

hope you guys find what you want and are able to get it...

Noise isn't really a big deal to me. I should be getting my 8790 tomorrow. I heard that laptop coolers really help out a lot.
If somebody used a laptop cooler with their 8790 - would it help cut down on the noise by keeping the laptop cool - and also help prolong the system's overall life?

usrbingeek has some pics of him using a cooler and some temp ratings/results.

i suspect that the cooler your notebook is for longer, the better it'll last...

just follows logic doesn't it?
