I just received my G1 recently, immediately hated Vista. Fortunately, I researched ahead and also ordered a Seagate Momentus 100GB 7200 SATA HD along with it. And, from another vendor, I got a copy of XP Pro 64 bit for $87 incl shipping!
Like you, I'm searching for drivers, gradually getting things functioning normally. My first challenge was to get a suitable display driver for the nVidia GeForce GO 7700 GPU card. Asus doesn't provide ANY 64 bit support, so if this isn't for you, stick with standard 32 bit XP Professional. NewEgg seems to have the best $$ on XP Pro 32 bit.
For XP drivers, try this link, they seem to have a pretty much comolete range of what you should need, either 32 or 64 bit XP stuff. The 64 bit drivers you more often have to look at them carefully and try one out, if it doesn't work, be sure to uninstall it before trying another one using Control Panels Add/Remove Programs feature. Hope I typed that in correctly for you.
BTW if you find anything for the ATK drivers my G1 keeps pestering me for each startup, I'd love a link to those! Just got my XP Pro 64 bit display driver functioning this evening after researching it for the past 2 hours. The one that worked actually wasn't for the GO 7700 card, but it's the first one that DIDN'T crash the installer. Another secret - do a Manual Installation of the driver. Download the driver, extract it to a folder where you know where you put it. Then, go to My Computer - Properties - Hardware - Device Manager - Display Adapters (in this case) click on the + to expand it. Right click on the device shown, choose Update Driver. Choose Install from a specific location radio button. Choose Don't Search radio button. Click the Have Disk button. Browse for the folder where you extracted the driver you downloaded awhile ago, open the file inside. Then let the installer do it's thing, you'll probably be asked to restart. If the installer works, you should be fine.
The driver which worked for my G1 with XP Professional 64 bit was 97.78, traced it down at TweaksRUs.com forums. Actually I just found out it's a 32 bit driver, and not really for the GO 7700 series card, but hey, it's the only one I could get to install and it works!
Hope this may be helpful. See you 'round!
