Ok so i am going to totally do away with the Windows partition on my notebook. But i want to still run some windows programs that do not run either very well or at all in Wine, so.... How do i install windows on a virtual machine inside of my Ubuntu Edgy install?

The more and more i use linux of course the better i get, but i am by no means an expert, so a dumbed down explanation of what i need to do would be great!

Thank you linux gods here!

get yourself some qemu and kqemu

http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/

the website is well documented so follow what it says.

then create a virtual image, stick in your windows disk, boot up your virtual machine and go for it.

btw....are there any native linux alts to the programs you wanna run? i am 100% linux right now on all 3 of my computers (2 lappies on PCLOS2007, desky on Ubuntu) and really dont have the urge to run any windows apps, besides maybe some games that cedega should take.

Actually Virtualbox I found relatively easy to set up and use, might be worth looking into. Uses the Qemu and KQemu code.

i would agree with abf, i tried vmware and it had a few bugs in ubuntu, but i did hack around at it to get it to work on an existing install, that may have been the problem. i'm sure it would have worked if i installed it manually.

What bugs? I've been using it for years and never had a problem.

awesome, well after messing around with my work laptop last night (i dont want to try it on my own laptop because i actually have data on here that i need) i got it working. First off, i upgraded to feisty fawn and formatted the whole hdd for linux with a gig swap partition. Then i installed the tuns of updates for feisty. Then i followed the directions for kqemu on ubuntu's website and FINALLY got Win2k to first off find a partition then format it then actually install to it. Awesomeness, its installing as i speak on a sweet ass 700mhz laptop and amazingly enough i think it will be enough to use my Outlook and OneNote perfectly. Oh man i love LInux!

Thank you for everyone that helped me here!
