installing 7950gtx in e1705

Well i have been doing some research on installing the new card, so i just bought a dell e1705 from dell outlet with the x1400 video card with the intent to upgrade, now when i look on line i see alot of instructions for the 7900gtx and what, but nothing for the 7950gtx. i know i will have to flash the bios, but im not really looking to overclock it, unless its gunna only be as fast as a 7900gs.

my only concern is the heat and i dont wanna get crazy on overclock and fry it, cause the card is 500 dollars. so other the getting it in the computer can somebody show me the file i need to flash the bios with, and if there was any new walk-threws out there, cause most of them seem to be about a year old, and anything that you came across that you found out on your own.

also i see the cards on ebay forsale, any other retails that your guys know off or the exact part number from dell?

thanks, steve

You won't need to flash the bios on the E1705 to get the 7950GTX to work. (unlike the 9300 which needed the xps bios to use the 6800u and 7800GTX) The 7900GTX and 7950GTX are exactly the same size so any guides for the 7900GTX will also work for the 7950GTX. As for heat it's not a problem because the E1705 has the same cooling system as the m1710. (with the exception of the E1705 7900GS card having only 1 heatpipe.) If you want to overclock you just need to flash the unlocked bios found here:

This allows you to overclock with software easily.

I think I'm about done with the laptop world personally just for this reason. Videocards (not solely videocards either) are just ridiculously overrpriced...I'm not sure if its because of limited availability of the dell form factor or what since I havent looked at prices of mxm based cards. The 7800gtx will run you $350+ and I could still probably get $200+ for my ultra which imo is only worth about $75-$100 now. I think even the ATI x300 will run you ~$100 and thats just the 32 mb version
Edit: just looked at some prices again on ebay and its definitely a better deal to just get a single or dual pipe 7900gs...your choice though
