New to laptops!!! Need Advice!!!

Hi all,

First things first, Im new here and thought this was the obvious place come for advice I've been using desktops for a LONG LONG time and have built many systems over the time so i'm very computer literate. Just when it comes to laptops im not the sharpest tool in the box!!!

THat said, Im looking for a top end laptop for use with resolume and adobe production suite. Both very demanding pieces of software in different area's!!!

Ill start from the top, what are the best money can buy laptops at the moment? Manufacturers?

Whats the main difference between GeForce and Quadro FX GPU's? THis is due to the software ill be using so any further advice on this would be greatly appreciated

Is there a 10,000RPM internal laptop HDD in any laptops of current?

And is the core 2 duo T7600 the best Mobile CPU on the market at the moment or does AMD have a say in it?

Any advice on buying a laptop would be gratful and thanks for your time and looking

In the mainstream market, the highest rated laptop right now is probably the Dell XPS series. I'm not sure about the specialized market ...probably Alienware.

I don't know, off the top of my head, what the graphic card differences are. I could probably find out from looking at the vendor websites, but then, so could you. :P

Seagate has a 36GB 10,000rpm drive in 2.5 form (called the Savvio), but I'm not aware of any laptops that ship with it.

I don't have the kind of money you are apparently looking to throw down for a laptop, so I'm probably quite a bit underqualified to help much. I have enough information in my head ...don't need to go looking for stuff I could never afford.

Yes, ill have a look ionto that drive. I did find this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Dell-Preci...QQcmdZViewItem

Pretty much everything im after except i would want the Quadro FX3500, not FX2500 and not bothered about the high resolution screen. Only problem being is its a DELL!!! I know to many people who have had problems and been stuck with there customer service. I dont have the highest regard for DELL but this is nearly perfect to what im looking for and around £2,000 is about right. On there web site, that same configeration is closer to £3,000 so it is a bargain. Its just that its a dell thats putting me off. Anyone but them haha

The main difference between the two cards is the the Quadro support open GPL, where the Nvidia do not. They are actually identical cards with the same core, memory etc.

One area that you may be able to look into would be the XPS range, as money is clearly no object you can get the 7600G which allows overclocking and can be clocked up to about 3gigHz.

If graphic power is the only goal check out killernotebooks, and Alienware - they have SLI versions which will out perform the 7950GTX but are based on AMD CPU's and to be honest are not as fast as the current Intel flavor but for some reason no one has an SLI laptop with a T7600, or maybe there is and I don't know who!!!!

Pretty much thats it - or you could donate some money to a worthy course ...............................

I'll PM you the bank details!!!!!!!

if your uk based theres the option of rockdirect.co.uk in terms of customer service they are the complete opposite to dell. Though i have delt with dell and as long as you know what you want you just tell guy on the phone what he needs to hear to send you the part And if dealing with there sales team haggle and watch only fools and horses and some life of brian the gord scene before talking to them to set scene the mood. As yuor Pc Literate i'd say go with dell and milk them for all there worth ( fight fire with fire - unless your on fire then waters better ) But if you want an easy experience go with rock, and if you must have Raid0 which is lubbly alienware maybe. (though dollar to pound might be worth looking at a usa vender?)

Cheer's guys, thats the kind of stuff i needed to hear, So the Quadro is the same as the Geforce except the price tag and Hardware drivers??? AM i right there? I noticed that all SLI were AMD and i really want stick with intels cause they are superior. My current rig im selling as a opteron 175 and the core2 leaves it for dust Paid £350 just over a year ago and its £150. Same with my video card and that. Its really expensive these days keep up with technology.

Anyways, looked at ROCK as well and noticed they had the Quadro FX3500M also. But there prices are way to much. Same spec came to £2,200 which compared to £1,600ish is silly money. As you say, Im literate with computers so i can deal with the zombies on the other end. I just dont want any technical problems like a few people i know have experienced, especially with buying it internationally.

I think! i am going go with that DELL and keep my finger's firmly crossed. The price is so tempting more than anything as im willing pay money but not silly money as i do live on the breadline believe it or not! Just VJ'ing as become a big part of my life now and its time to take it forward. Hardware is extreamly expensive and software is a cheap and some may say, better option. If i get a Seagate Savvoy 10K/15K HDD that will make that laptop absolutly perfect for me. Its an extra £350 for 4GB instead of 2GB but i read that only 2.8GB will be recognised so ill leave that. I think thats very misleading advertising to say the least! Plus i dont think an extra £350 is justified.

I think i've made my mind up havn't i??? haha. Just that its alot of money and i cant afford make the wrong mistake and end up with a dead horse! Plus i gotta shell out £550 for resolume & the Controller and the projector is just going have to wait a bit. Seen a nice panasonic HD one but its a grand! But that can be my TV and everything so its a good investment

Sorry for essay but thanks for everyones advice, I just wanted/needed some advice and i think im set now

Cheers all

Yes, well i seen the Dell M90 on EBAY.COM and a guy will ship it for $180 to UK. Its top of the range except its only 2GB and not 4GB and total comes to $3,279 (£1,650) which is nearly a £1,000 than Dell.co.uk!

Bargain

I'd second an M90. It would be good for what you plan to be doing. You want to do multimedia content creation correct? The M90 has a very powerful professional GPU (Quadro, just buy the most expensive GPU option, I forgot the name, sorry). Processor wise, there is little difference between most computers. As for HD, if you have a ton of cash, there are always SSDs (flash drives) but they run in the multi thousands for 32 GB. 7200 RPM is quite zippy for a lappy.

I third the M90. Yeah it has the Quadro FX 2500m, very powerful. Its perfect for you.

Yes, cheers guys, Thats what i wanted hear. Its actually got the FX3500 which i think is just a overclocked FX2500, simalar to the Geforce 7950 to the 7900.

As for HD, going go for this:
http://www.westerndigital.com/en/pro...sp?DriveID=270

2x500GB(1TB) external raid HDD, More than enough for video stuff and will be fast as well. Just wondering if anyone knows if you can get external raid bays so i can put what HDD i want into it. And i may get a seagate Savvoi 10k for internally. If money permits that one though. And i dont think it will to be honest haha

Minds set now, My desktop finishes on satuarday on ebay so hope to have it by end of next week hopefully. Bit of retail theropy is good once in a while
