Shopping: Know specs, need help with brands.

Thread Starter
Greetings to all.

I need some help picking out a laptop model that can best suit my needs. Lately I've been looking at Dell as they seem to have a huge selection of laptops.
My problem is, Dell seems to like hiding the various models they offer in different ways across their site! As soon as I find one laptop with a close-match feature set, I find another which is a close match in a different way.

I'm not new to pc hardware in general, just the brands and product structures when it comes to laptops.

If I provide the specs I'm most interested in sticking to, would some forum regulars - who are familiar with Dells (and other brands) lineup - be able to come up with some suggestions?

I'd like to be able to find a laptop with:

Core2 Duo W/4MB cache (2.0GHz is fine).
NVidia non-sharing video. Anything decent: 7600,7900...
15.4" wide screen with a nice resolution.
2GB RAM (Speed doesn't matter)
100GB HDD at least. Again, speed not a huge huge issue.
Well-supported 802.11b/g/n? in Linux.

If the price can come in under $2000CAD (~$1800USD?) that would be ideal as well. I see so many options on Dell's site, yet they seem to refuse to offer me exactly what I want in the combination I want. Very frustrating.

Also, what's the verdict on Santa Rosa / Centrino Pro? Should I wait? How long will it take for Dell to come out with notebooks based on Centrino Pro?

I would wait for Santa Rosa just because it will be out soon. If you are going to be using Linux then get the Intel wifi. Last time I checked Dell uses the Broadcom chipset and it is not supported well in Linux. You should also take a look at Apple.
